As my nan used to say when baking my favourite cake: "It'll be done when it's done, and it'll be ready a while after that."
I learnt that the best thing to do was go and play (or watch whatever my granddad was watching on TV). The time 'til the cake was brought in seemed to fly by that way.

(And now I want some of my nan's cake, but she's been gone 15 years so I'll never know its like again.)

Dessert, pudding, afters, sweet (I think that's the correct spelling...), all pretty much interchangeable. Cake is cake, dessert, afters, the sweet (course), but never pudding (equally, pudding can be pudding, dessert, afters, the sweet, but never cake). Cookies are specific things, otherwise they're biscuits.

Dessert under a dome. So near and yet so far away.
