Adam West, the gray-stockinged star of the 1960s Batman TV show, has died at the age of 88.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement. West died peacefully in his home Friday night after a battle with leukemia, and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

West first caught the eye of the Batman show’s producer after he appeared as a different kind of caped crusader in a series of commercials for Nestle’s Quik.

Rest in Peace. Mr. West. I still do your dance moves.

Having an older brother, I was forced to watch Batman. (I liked it a lot more than I would admit to my brother.)

"what's it say" "read it" "you missed one! Read them all" "mo-om he's not reading them"

I'm pretty sure the first word I ever read was "POW"

'Batman' introduced me to Poison Ivy and all black-leather Cat Woman, as a young kid...; and 'walking' up the side of buildings, via a rope ('60s camera tricks-who did that then though, right?)...sure he's speeding around some street corner, in something that would impress his old 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car itself.

[Inuit say (paraphrased): every object has a 'spirit'].

....the images you folks have posted pretty much say it all...this loss plunged the knife of mortality deep for me...I remember as a little GNT feverishly awaiting the "na na na na na nana....Batman!"...What I admired most about Adam was his ability to laugh at the campiness of the concept and even appreciate parodies-including those he perpetuated himself....we'll make sure Alfred secures the Bat Cave good sir, rest ye well and have fun in the clearing with the rest of the cast who are waiting...Commissioner Gordon?....would you please dim the Bat Signal?.....

Whew. Someone at work told me, and I'm okay. But the five year old in me is wrecked.

The best tweet I've seen

All the other Batmen should go to Adam West's funeral, like when a former president dies.

Tallest Batman. Clocked in more Batman hours than any Batman ever has, or ever will. Coolest Batman -- his Bruce Wayne wore a blazer with a family crest! Wore the only costume that even vaguely resembled Batman in the comics of his era. Only film Batman to actually use a batarang! Ever. Only Batman you'd trust around your kids. Most handsome Batman!

When I think Dr. Who, Tom Baker will always be the first Doctor I think of. Nimoy the first Spock. West will always be the first Batman.
