There are few things I find as boring as serial killers. Judging by how popular they are in fiction, one could almost assume you would find one in every apartment complex. That said, The Killer Next Door is indeed about a pretty disturbed serial killer, but I enjoyed the book immensely.

This is the first book I have read by Marwood, and I probably wouldn't have read it had not SK blurbed about it (yeah, I can be that suggestible). I am glad I took his advice though. The book works because it focus more on the characters surrounding the actual killer, than the killer himself. That, and Marwoods keen eye on real people and their struggle to make ends meet, made this a whole lot more than just another dive into the abyss of a deranged killer psyche.

Certain aspects regarding the character Lisa/Collette I found to be a bit over the top and hard to believe. Also, if I were the editor, I might have butchered a better part of the ending.

With those minor criticisms out of the way, I have to admit that it was a long time since I was so enthralled by a book that I almost missed my stop on the subway. And that, my friends, is me telling you that you ought to read this. I will certainly read her other book, The Wicked Girls shortly.

PS. Blunthead: Did I get was/were right? DS.
