I think Neil Gaiman had a great idea a few years ago: give a horror book for Halloween!

So, I have a question: If you were going to give one scary Stephen King book to someone, which one would it be?

What horror book by anyone else?

This would depend on who the individual is, what they've already read, and if the person is a CR already. If not a CR I'd give The Dead Zone, because I believe it's the best starter choice. To a current fan I'd need to know which books they've yet to read.

The Talisman...cause I'm trying to think what I'd like and what I'd like is a good werewolf story...but those seem to be lacking or I dunno what they are...though there is that one outfit out of Washington...or is it Italy...bunch of hoodlums maybe. Anyone know any good werewolf stories? Saw this old black and white movie yay ago...villagers w/pitchforks...werewolf up there on the barn roof or something, growling at them, shirt in shreds...then we had Dark Shadows, after school...waiting til the last fifteen seconds of the show and they'd show the werewolf...but just a hand on the bed going into convulsions...getting all hairy and claw-ee. Big horny claws gripping the mattress. This is what happens when you're teased with teasers from a young age. SHOW ME THE WEREWOLF!

I liked Lonely Werewolf Girl (Martin Millar) :)

Thank you. Downloading on the kindle as I type...something about "hilarious" won me over. But was thinking about my choice, Talisman, and even King/Straub kept the wolf in a box...fer cryin out loud! :rage: Maybe they were playin on the ole Dark Shadows theme?

That's very cool!

I would give Salem's Lot to my dad. I think he would like it :) He liked all the SK books that he has read, and I think he would like the "vampires" role in it since he does watch those kinds of moves/TV shows, as well. I think it will give him a good "spook.";-D

If you looking for scariest it would be Pet Semetary. Best IT. For a little younger readers Carrie. Now in november a zombie fan friend of mine is having her birthday. I was thinking of giving her Cell. Other Authors.. One that people should read more of is Shirley Jackson. So i would give The Haunting of Hill House and The Sundial.

Good choices! I really admire Jackson.

I casually read the thread and didn't realize you meant SK books only. Though SK is on record saying The Passage was a great book.

Not at all! Anything you'd recommend :) If my kids didn't already have The Graveyard Book and Coraline, those would be at the top of my list to give them. As is, I've been looking for a copy of Shudders--it was a compilation of short stories that I remembered while watching The House That Dripped Blood, as one of the stories was covered in that movie (Sweets for the Sweet--Bloch's written story was far more creepy than the movie version, though). It was marketed to kids, but a lot of the stories were really scary or creepy.

That is a great idea. I've never read Neil Gaiman - maybe I should give my kids The Graveyard Book and Coraline. I've tried to encourage my son to read The Eyes of the Dragon. My oldest is an avid reader but my youngest two are not, which is so sad to me. Maybe my son would enjoy Pet Semetary more. I'm ruminating without coffee here, so I can't be sure about anything. Just waiting for it. I know you get it skimom2 .

Maybe Cycle of the Werewolf instead of The Talisman?
