Grady Franklin Stiles, Jr. (June 26, 1937 – November 29, 1992) was a freak show performer. His deformity was ectrodactyly, in which the fingers and toes are fused together to form claw-like extremities. Stiles' stage name was the "Lobster Boy".
The condition runs in families. Stiles was the 6th generation that had it, and 2 of his four children also had the same condition.

Stiles was an alcoholic and was abusive to his family. Due to his ectrodactyly, he was unable to walk. While he often used a wheelchair, he most commonly used his hands and arms for locomotion. He developed incredible upper body strength that, when combined with his temper and alcoholism, made him dangerous to others. He was abusive to his wife and children , even shotting and killing his daughter's fiance on the eve of their wedding. The abuse lead his family to conspire to have him murdered for the sake of their protection.

I found some cast photos, including lobster boy:

Great pictures! Frances Conroy. I always leave her out and she is fantastic as well. I absolutely loved her character in Asylum.
Thanks for sharing these!

I used to think it was insensitive to go the freak show at the state fair, then learned not going was worse as that's how they make a living, so I go and I voice all the proper ohhhhh's and ahhhhh's. I am very careful not to say anything that might make them think I'm making fun of them.

I gots to admit something though that does make me sound insensitive. One year, the performer with lobster claws was in Krogers. He was in a wheelchair and he was using his bare lobster claw feet to pick up items off the bottom shelves. He'd look at the items and put them back like a common person would do but I was unable to buy anything off the bottom shelves for months :(

WOW! Amazing info and pictures! Thanks, LL!
Looks like Evan Peters IS playing Lobster Boy. Don't know if I'll be able to watch this season, though. I am overly sensitive to the emotional pain of others-even when it is fictitious. What a ninny, huh?! :a11:
