Many times in the "What Are You Reading?" thread, there are some great recommendations from our members. I thought I'd start a thread that's a little more specific.

Do you have a book in your To-Be-Read pile that you're wondering is any good?
Are you thinking about downloading/buying a book, but not sure if you would like it?
I thought we could throw out a few titles here, and members could give their opinions (of course, without spoilers), to help us make decisions about what to read next.

For example, I know if skimom2 likes a book, generally I will like it too, due to the fact that we're twinners!

Here's my first title about which you can give your opinion: I Am Legend. I was flipping through the TV channels, and saw a bit of the movie with Will Smith. Seems like I remember that a lot of people think the book is awesome? What do you think?

Excellent idea, Danie!

I haven't read I Am Legend, but I did love the movie.

I have Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Middlesex in my pile to TBR. I'd like some opinions. Saw them at the thrift store and bought because they've been bestsellers, but I know that doesn't really speak for the quality of the book.

I Am Legend is more of a novella than a novel, and it's very good. Matheson has some interesting things to say about prejudice and how we should question our assumptions. Miss Peregrine is gimmicky but not unpleasant. Middlesex was a dense read for me, and not very enjoyable.

Love this thread, danie :)

Miss Peregrine's was just okay for me. I would call it more of a Young Adult book. Also, when I read it, I didn't know it was a set up for a second book that I didn't know was being written (the ending was completely unresolved). So, if you want to know what happens, you'll have to read the second (Hollow City). The third book (Library of Souls) is due in September of this year. I believe there's also a movie being made of the first novel.

Justin Cronin's, The Twelve

His first book, The Passage, was a great book. I've heard people say book two was a let down.
For me it had more to do with the style in which it was written as the jumping back and forth between characters and time lines was confusing so would put it aside for another book for a while and by the time I'd return, I'd forgotten even more of it. It took me a long time to finish as a result. I'll read the third one to find out what happens but am hoping he won't use that again.

Middlesex is one of my favorite novels on the 2000s.

I am Legend is excellent. I recommend the book. I also recommend the 1964 movie adaptation with Vincent Price (in a non-horror role) titled The Last Man on Earth. Good flick.

...you can't go wrong with a read of Richard Matheson...

...both books thus far of "Miss Peregrine", gimmicky or no, have fascinated me-and have been a nice departure...

Same results here. I found I had to stop with each shift in time / characters. Take a break and return to reading. I even made a notebook to help keep track. I think it was one the longest books to read. Will also read the third. Let this one be a non shifting story line. I'm getting to old to hold all those facts in ck.

Great thread!!!

I have several books on my TBR list:

George RR Martin- A Game of Thrones
Tabitha King- Survivor
The Divergent trilogy

.....some among many....
The only one of those that I've read is Game of Thrones, and it was fantastic! Martin has a complex world built, without pages of dry description--he introduces you through the interactions and natural dialogue of the characters. That's an accomplished writer, in my book.

Justin Cronin's, The Twelve

I agree that the Passage was good. The Twelve is not bad but it is, in my opinion, far from reaching The Passage. The Twelve was very slow but i worked my way through it. Martins Game of Thrones is Excellent. Highly recommended. Haven't read Survivor. The Divergent-series.... I am a bit mixed regarding that one. I think the first is quite good. It is riding on Hunger Games success but it does it well but is not as good as that. Just like Hunger games the trilogy is best the first half to go down a little after that. But the chance is that you'll like it if you liked hunger games. But hunger games are a little better straight through.
