Fair question. Years ago, when I first came across the word (via Uncle Stevie), there was no "Google". I just read the word as it was spelled and moved on. I didn't think much of it until I read Dreamcatcher recently (not sure why). I was going to Google it, but then thought it would be more fun, and probably more informative, if I posted about it in here. If I had just Googled it I wouldn't have known that Downeasters pronounced it differently. So sometimes Google is not always best. Sometimes the forum is best.

That's fair and I agree, but you can learn a lot by Googling it as well:

I think both ways have their own merits and that a combination of the two is a good way to get a fully rounded education.

I first remember reading that word when I read 4 Past Midnight, from Pop Merril. It probably pops up in IT but I can't remember - there's alot to remember in that book, small things often get pushed out. I always read it as "Eye-uh" elongating the "uh" so it sounds like a Welsh man saying "here"

When I was a kid and we were on a camping vacation in Maine, we went to a local church supper. (It was a fairly inexpensive way to feed a family of 6!) There was a line to get your tickets, which would be turned over to pick up your meal. The ticket man was very old, in overalls, in a rocking chair, on the farmer's porch (cliche's much!) and was definitely a gen-you-wine Downeaster, and he had the stereotypical Downeaster drawl. It was funny to hear him speak as my only real exposure this accent before was on TV. "You folks aren't from around he-ah, ayuh."
