I played men's softball many years (basically the entire 80s and 90s). I remember we were doing batting practice one weekend (probably around 1990) and someone showed up with a new high tech aluminum bat. We were using aluminum bats at the time but they were the old heavy ones. The bat that this guy brought was 28 oz and before we used it, we were all making comment like, "how can anyone hit with such a light bat?" We started using this bat and balls started flying out of the park left and right (which was a bit of a rarity at the time). Before long, we all had $150.00 bats. All of the fields that we had been playing on quickly became obsolete. ;-D

I remember the first expensive bat I bought. These bats were available at Sports Authority and we didn't have one close (there was no internet at the time either - maybe it was there but no one knew it yet ;-D). I had a friend and teammate that was doing a job close to that Sports Authority so I gave him $150 and told him to buy me one of those bats. When he came back that night and gave me the bat I noticed it was beat to hell. I found out he stopped at a batting cage on the way back and hit with it for an hour. I was so pissed, I was saying, "I can't believe you took my expensive new bat to a freaking batting cage." ($150 in 1990 is probably $300 today)
I would have used the bat on him! I had stopped playing softball when they came out. I got myself one last year on sale, specifically make for coaches... for infield and outfield practice. My wife almost killed me. Good thing I didn’t end up getting the used softball pitching machine I was looking at on ebay, or I’d be single today. :)

:biggrin-new:

Actually I hope the Sox pass on him at this point. Would rather keep the young talent at home when they are stinking the place up.

Beware pitchers over 30 with mega deals. They rarely work out.

Pitching for the Sox has actually been decent lately. Not being able to score runs is the bigger problem right now. And it shouldn't be with the talent in their lineup. Very strange season.

If they don't make the playoffs this year both the GM and Manager will be looking for new jobs.

The woman who was struck in the head by the bat continues to improve. Her condition has been upgraded from serious to fair as of this morning.
Good. I think for now what the powers that be will do is simply have the announcers remind the crowd at the beginning of each game to pay attention. Not that she hadn't been, but as a disclaimer, if they need one and if they aren't already doing this. It will have the same effect as someone recommending that people file their taxes early.

As predicted, Sox drop 2 of the first 3 in Baltimore this week. So frustrating

Last night, E-Rod pitches 7 innings of shutout ball. Drops his ERA to 0.49 and they can't score one freakin' run! Maybe they should threaten to bench anyone who is taking a stupid approach at the plate. Ortiz and Napoli, I'm looking at you!!

In 1960, Roberto Clemente asked for $23,000.00 instead of the $20,000.00 he was offered. Here is a copy of the refusal letter. ;-D Wonder what Roberto would be worth today? I only saw Roberto on TV at the tail end of his career (the fantastic 1971 World Series he had is one of those memories) but he was an awesome player then.

This Is The Refusal Roberto Clemente Got When He Asked For A Raise

David Ortiz (Big Papi) got his 500th HR tonight! At least one bright spot in the Sox season. Oh yeah, Betts, Bogarts, and JBJ are pretty good too!
