I truly believe the best athletes are baseball players. I love nfl and nba but what sport where u fail 70% of the time and ur in the hall. I truly believed I was going to the majors. In college I remember my wake up call. I played with a guy that was unreal. He was a catcher and had a Canon for an arm. Throwing guys out from the knees. He had a tryout with the reds. Not an open one where 400 show up. Invite only. There were 4 catchers there and he called me after day one and said he had the worst arm of the 4. I was like what the heck. He remembered the best catchers name. He never made it either. That's how tuff it is. My sophomore year I hit 340, made all conference. Played in very competitive summer leagues. Lots of D-1 players and I was never even on anyone's radar. These guys are unreal at the highest level.

Agree with everything you said. Played baseball all over state of NC way back in ancient times(early 80s). Only 2 guys I ever played against made it, Greg Harris pitcher with Padres and Scott Bankhead Royals and Red Sox.

As I have seen somewhere before a baseball player can play a lot of other sports, basketball and football for example, but those guys usually can't play baseball.

What a game.

Russel Martin, our catcher, started the game playing 3rd.

Coghlan dove over the catcher (see link above).

Stroman (a pitcher) was put in as a pinch hitter and started an extra inning rally. Made it home...winning run.

The Phillies are in the basement of the NL East... again. The Dodgers just dropped to second place in the NL west... their pitchers need some help from the offense.

Random thought... is there any other sport in which the defense controls the ball?

I posted about this in the What Are You Reading Thread but figured I'd mention it here for the baseball fans. I'm reading Rick Ankiel's autobiography "The Phenomenon" and recommend it for baseball fans. Rick went to a local high school so I knew about him before he got to the majors and always followed his career. When he was in high school, he was always in the news around here for his complete domination of high school baseball and his father was in the news for other reasons. Anyway, if you feel like a good baseball read, pick it up.

Rick had one of the greatest outfield arms I ever saw. Of the guys that I remember seeing, I can only think of Dwight Evans and Roberto Clemente as better. Willie Mays had a great arm but I only remember Willie at the tail end of his career and never really saw him at his best. I remember Clemente at the tail end of his career too but he still had a cannon when he was older.

Anyone remember last years fiasco on the Canadian anthem at the Allstar game? It was a Canadian group (The Tenors) and one changed the words. Americans in attendance didn't seem to notice (he changed them to "all lives matter"). And since FOX always just skips our anthem :facepalm_smiley: Americans didn't really understand why Canadians were freaking out on twitter.

Well, this year...it was a giggle. Smoak was the only Jay voted into the starting line up. He didn't look impressed.

My prediction for the World Series will be the Dodgers (beating out the Nationals in the NL pennant) against the Astros (beating out the Red Sox in the AL pennant). Dodgers win in 7.

(GO DODGERS! My uncle played on the Dodgers for two years, later in his career. One year in Brooklyn and one in Los Angeles. His Batting Average for the Dodgers was .263 and had an On Base Percentage of .352. The guy was one of the best ever at realizing the strike zone)

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but..... I agree with you about the Dodgers. I even mentioned to a client the other day that they're playing like they mean it again. It's been a long time coming.

Hey, if you want to send Joey Bats somewhere else the Red Sox will take 'em! He'd make a good DH!

Really? I thought nobody wanted him because of his attitude?

Personally, I don't think the bat flip was bad attitude. To me, it seemed much more like he was saying about himself "about f-ing time". But he's an angry player. Cameras have caught him.

He was available during the off season.

Dodgers are good but will not win the WS. Clayton Kershaw can't win a playoff game to save his life.

The one thing the Red Sox are missing is that big bat.

Capitalism at it's finest. Baseball isn't like the other sports. If bb was like fb my team the indians would be much better off. We have less than half the budget of Yankees but still manage to get there. Problem is we can't keep our stars. So we have to win with them during their 1st contract. So I'm glad he left.
