Re hair color maintenance: the less time in the water, the better. So try not to wash it every day if you don't really have to, and be quick about it when you do. Plus the good shampoos and not using hot water helps, as already mentioned.

I henna my hair (always making sure to source the good stuff, plus I know what I'm doing—though really, it's not difficult at all), so I don't worry about it washing out. Henna is permanent. Plus it smells awesome and doesn't irritate my skin.

I use a mixture of 3:1 olive oil/castor oil to clean my face and then just use a tiny amount of olive oil as moisturizer. Sounds weird, but my skin has never looked better. I've been doing this for about 2 years. Cheap & easy - I just mix it up in a travel shampoo dispenser, put it on my face first thing when I get in the shower, let the steam work it's magic, wipe it off and splash with cold water. Disclosure: it doesn't make me beautiful, but it does give me good skin.
All oil has certain properties in common, but olive oil is actually full of antioxidants. I like it on my skin too, although I am pretty bad about doing anything consistently. I think we tend to overlook olive oil or not think of it as special because we pretty much all have it in our kitchen, but yeah, it's great stuff.

I use this every couple of nights now... because of Holly's post. My skin feels so much softer, it was a great tip!

I use olive oil, grapeseed oil or coconut oil (unrefined) interchangeably-whatever I have on hand. I love using the coconut oil because it smells so good. Probably wouldn't be the same for those who hate coconut!

I like the smell of coconut oil, maybe I'll get some of this sometime. I used the Olive Oil mainly because I had some in the kitchen.
I had a little squirty thing of some serum or other ... when I emptied it out, I put olive oil in it and use it occasionally. I think I'll move it into the shower.
I had been (sometimes I just make more work for myself :biggrin2: ) leaving it until the last thing at night before bed (not even the cats are awake at this time at my place) and applying it (after washing my face)... standing on a kitchen chair because it's in a top cupboard.
I didn't want my family seeing I was using the Olive Oil as a moisturiser, they just wouldn't 'get it'.

Anyway, when I was buying groceries yesterday, I spent enough to qualify for a free gift... in the choices was a small bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil... oh yes please!
It is sitting up on the bathroom window sill behind my Olay moisturiser, last night's bed time routine was so much easier! :biggrin2:

I was looking at popcorn recipes and wondered why so many recipes listed coconut oil as an ingredient as I'd always thought it was one of the "bad" fats. So I searched coconut oil on amazon to read reviews. I was surprised to discover reviewers rated coconut oil as a 5-star skin and hair moisturizer rather than a cooking ingredient. Have any of y'all tried coconut oil as a moisturizer?
I use an organic coconut oil as my night time moisturizer for all over my body and the night before I wash my hair I saturate it with coconut oil as well. It is easy to wash out and leaves your hair super soft.

Coconut oil is really trendy right now. Hell, according to the internet it will probably stop potential world wars and cure cancer. It's an oil, just like every other. It'll do the job to moisturize skin. I was just re-reading The Handmaid's Tale & she saved her butter pats from dinner to use as lotion--lol.
It is true, it is just an oil but if you put olive oil or baby oil in your hair you really have to shampoo it before you get it wet...otherwise, water proof hair and it take ages to come out...not the same with coconut oil, you can wet it and then shampoo and it is all good :)

Popping in to add some tips I know, most of which have to do with dry skin. Lessee ...

For a gentle and effective exfoliant, mix a little baking soda into a bit of your body or face wash. It won't damage your skin (beyond the expected exfoliation).

I am terrible at taking this advice, but: to keep from drying out your skin, especially in the winter, take quick showers with warm, not even close to hot, water. I KNOW. I love long, hot showers too. But they dry out your skin something fierce.

To deal with the lizard skin hands this time of year, before bed, after a little gentle exfoliation (baking soda and body wash), towel dry your hands. Apply a good lotion or cream. Then top that with vegetable shortening. Yep, Crisco. Then slip your hands into cotton gloves. (I've used socks when I was desperate.) Go to sleep. I KNOW. But just try it. You'll be amazed the next morning.

If your skin is sensitive or easily irritated, go easy on the stuff with fragrances, especially things that stay on your skin, like lotion. Soap that gets washed off is less of an issue. I am not remotely an alarmist, but it is true that fragrances tend to irritate skin.

Honey, though sticky and messy, is a really good humectant. So if you gently wash your face, pat it dry so that it is a little damp, rub a little honey on, let it sit for 15 minutes or so, then rinse, your skill will look and feel more moisturized. For this use, it does not really matter what type of honey, whether it is raw or not, etc.

Speaking of facial masks, be careful what you put on your skin. I would love to be able to use an avocado mask because I am sure it is very moisturizing. However, it turns out that although I have no problems at all eating avocado, it burns the sh!t out of my skin, turns it red, and makes it swell. Nothing else I know of does that to me. So ... yeah ... try a little spot for a few minutes before you go whole hog with a new thing. You never know.
