Jerome logs on under the Umbrella. He meets a girl chatting with him and he tells Hodges: "She says her name is Bernice, but I can call her Berni.
With an i.
She sounds cute as hell, and I won’t say I’m not tempted, but she’s probably a cross-dressing shoe salesman from Boston who lives with his mother."

Berni is short for Bernice.
What does it mean "with an i". Is there pun here?

When Berni is spelled Bernie it would usually be short for Bernard. Spelling it with just an "i" (or a "y") would be the feminine spelling.
