We talk so much about scary or creepy movies but i thought i give you a taste of my taste in comedies. Best ever, over every decennia. I'll name 15 of my alltime faves.

  • Modern Times - Chaplin, 1936
  • Bringing up Baby - Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, 1938
  • Whisky Galore - Basil Radford, Joan Greenwood, 1949
  • The Ladykillers - Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom, 1955
  • Some like it hot - Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, 1959
  • One, two, three - James Cagney, Pamela Tiffin, Arlene Francis, 1961
  • Its a Mad, Mad, Mad world - Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney, Ethel Merman, 1963
  • The Pink Panther - David Niven, Peter Sellers, Claudia Cardinale, 1963
  • Whats up, Doc - Barbra Streisand, Ryan o'neal, 1972
  • Blazing saddles - Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, 1974
  • Foul Play - Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase, Dudley Moore, 1978
  • Life of Brian - Monty Python, 1979
  • A Fish Called Wanda - John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Palin, Kevin Kline, 1988
  • The Naked Gun - Leslie Nielsen, 1988
  • Roxanne - Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah, 1989
Ok, i have revealed myself but its true! I belong to the breed that thought comedies were better some years ago. To make a movie funny you shouldn't have to be drunk and be stupid which seems to be the premise of many recent comedies (the Hangover movies...).

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is firmly embedded in our family culture. Life of Brian was brilliant.

Blazing Saddles. You won't hear it in the original form on a cable channel.

Duck Soup and Horse Feathers. I'm a sucker for the Marx Bros.

I hesitate to mention Dumb and Dumber, but I have never heard Grandma laugh so hard as when Jeff Daniels was on the toilet.

Animal House, Caddyshack, and Vacation, the trio that made National Lampoon movies for me.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Things like Princess Bride and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang made me laugh, but I'd put them more in the category of romantic/thriller adventure with odd and funny twists and dialogue. If if they're comedy, sure, add them in.

Some Like It Hot.

Airplane and The Naked Gun were the best of those farce subgenres.

Office Space wasn't a screecher, but it's a great cultural reference. And we say things like, "Yeahhh..." and "Ynmnmhemn my stapler nemngmn stapler" a lot.

Ishtar. Okay, I'm kidding. Never saw it.

Its a Mad, Mad, Mad World was my favourite comedy up until the time I saw Get Him to The Greek. I love both films equally.

As far as comedies go, I'm more apt to name TV shows rather than films:

'Allo 'Allo
Are You Being Served
Perfect Strangers
Three's Company
Sanford and Son
Cheers
Night Court

Monthy Python and the Holy Grale
The naked Gun
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
This is the End
Four Lions
Airplane
Top Secret
Kick Ass
Mars Attacks
Top Secret became a kind of cult-thing in my family, that and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, oh and also The Little Shop of Horrors... oh heck and The Young Ones!
My aunty and I used to watch all of these over and over, we used to quote them all the time and still send each other little snippets of dialogue via txt messages when the occasion fits. :biggrin2:
