For your first question, I think the bad memories were forgotten/repressed.
I always figured he was possessed by IT and probably did not remember any of that.
On page 374 they discuss the topic of neurologically external memory trails. I think it has something to do with the ether and dark matter. Just kidding! I have no clue, and, when that happens I rely on the old twosome of Fate and Destiny. Welcome!!!
