I'm so sorry OoO, I was upset about the turtle too :( I didn't see the attack until it was too late to save it :( There are a bunch of sliders in our pond and they're all friendly - well, they don't run over to greet me but they don't attack either so I consider them friendly :)

While I'm saddened about it (I love turtles!!) it's Nature's true course. Much better for Mr. or Mrs. Slider to go this way than under a car tire for example.

So, my husband and I brought home a cockatiel a few days ago. While things are going well, I was wondering if anyone here had advice on tiels? I've never kept one before...
MOVE OUT! Damn awful noisy creatures, they are. Ours escaped it's cage when I was cleaning it outside. I was not forlorn. Then we got two parakeets to replace it. Double the noise now... just great. :(

You're so funny, Dio! My husband didn't even like birds, but let me get two parakeets anyway. Then he wound up liking them, and he's the one that wanted to bring the tiel home! So now we have two tiny chatter boxes that never shut up, and a cockatiel that likes to call across the living room to them. Personally, I like the chatter. And my son goes nuts when the birds are let out for playtime, he thinks they're the best things ever!

Oh, and OoO? We don't have cats anymore....

Oh, don't be sad. I was joking. We had a love bird (named Larry) many moons ago and adopted a cat while he was still chirping away. Took a little bit of rearranging on the cage hanging end, but it worked out. Larry didn't like to leave his cage, he would climb on it, but wouldn't leave it..so that helped. :D

Would you like two more parakeets? Two birds, bird cage, food, and lots of toys... $25. (I'll pay even more if I have to. :))

I had a lovebird once upon a time; one of those really pretty peach and green ones. Her name was Jasmine, and she was bonded with a little parakeet named Jasper. Jasper was one of the best 'keets I've ever owned. His wings were clipped so short when I bought him that he looked like a little moth, but he had no problem sitting on my shoulder from day one. He was friendly, loving, and way too sweet to his giant wife, who liked to chew on his toes. (She made up for it by slouching down to his height when they were perched side by side. Cutest thing ever!)

I had their cage in my then-husband's room, and often let them out to play. One day, I hadn't checked the bedroom door carefully enough, and my mother-in-law's cat discovered my flightless parakeet...it was hard to tell who was more heartbroken, me or Jasmine. She was fully flighted, and therefore safe from the cat, but I think she may have witnessed the event. I've never heard a bird grieve before, but lovebirds definitely let you know when they're heartbroken.

Ever after, I've been extremely paranoid about having cats and birds in the same house. Anyway, sorry for the long story, but that's what popped immediately into my head when I read your post. I'm glad you didn't have a similar tale!

Yes, I can see why you would be hesitant about having another cat. Poor little Jasper. :(

That's just what Larry looked like! We were always asked about having just the one love bird, but we bought him as a chick and the breeder said that you could have them alone and not just in pairs. And Larry was fine with it.....I used to love the way he nibbled on my fingers and loved rubbing his neck for his scratchies......:D I haven't thought about that in years!!

Would you believe we had a Dalmatian named Jasmine? Kids called her Jazzy.....she was an awesome dog and a rescue to boot!!:applause:

Larry sounds like a wonderful bird! Do you have any pictures?

And rescue pets are amazing, I prefer them over "breeder" animals! One of the best dogs I ever owned was a rescue.
