I had cockatiels 20 years ago.. gave them away when my middle son was around 2 years old because he 'tortured' them.. lol They are sweet and easy keepers if you get them very young OR get them from someone who tamed them.

Haha I think I missed the mark then! Oh well, Fawkes is beautiful and I love him no matter what.

Oh! And your macaw is stunning! I've always wanted a pair, one red, one blue, but I doubt it'll ever happen. Keep us updated about your lovely boy, I for one would love to see how he grows with you!

Older birds can still be trained.. Hope I didn't discourage you. It just takes a little more effort than a young had fed/tamed baby. AND.. cockatiels are small enough they don't hurt so bad should they decide to take a nip LOL ! They are beautiful birds! I love birds. I want to build an indoor/outdoor aviary full of a variety of small birds. That will be a few years down the line... but it is my goal

So, my husband and I brought home a cockatiel a few days ago. While things are going well, I was wondering if anyone here had advice on tiels? I've never kept one before...
Is it a young one? Male or female?

I had a cockatiel that was raised from a very young chick (our pair had four eggs and this was the only one that made it). The others were all dying, so I took the last one out and raised it by feeding it with an eye dropper every two hours and keeping it in a box covered with a heating pad.

You can teach them to talk - I really like cockatiels.

Also! I forgot to mention, Fawkes and I made some great progress today! Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to give me advice!
Your bird looks like one of the birds I had - his name was Coco - we thought he was a female when we bought him. He ended up breeding with Buddy (who we had thought was a male but turned out to be the female).

I think Debbie913 has had Cockatiels.
I own a 'Tiel. The advice I'd give is to remember that they're very social birds. They like to be involved with what's going on around them. They like being talked to, and they like to play with toys that hang in their cage. Mine LOVES millet sprigs. And, for some reason, HATES mirrors.
Above all, patience. They have to get used to you, just like you have to get used to you.

That's so funny! I'm going under the impression that Fawkes is male, but I honestly have no idea.
Isn't that coloration pretty? I have no idea what the name for it is, but I can't get over how pretty it looks. I always think of butter on popcorn, especially with how the pale yellow is kind of mottled on the wings. And the red eyes are awesome! It's a good thing I have other things to do during the day, or I'd just be staring at my bird!
I'd love to hear more about your 'tiels, if you ever want to share. :smile2:
