I purchased several SK books from a used bookstore a few months ago, and one, "The Shining" is a Book Club Edition, published by Doubleday & CO , copyright 1977. I have never read "The Shining", and am ready to begin, but wonder if this would be abridged? It does not say that it is. Can anybody enlighten me?

No, I'm sure it's the full edition. I think the only difference with book club editions is that they may be a little smaller.

I don't think SK allows any abridgements, even in audiobooks.

King's 1st five novels are all the same size as bookclub editions. I was at a used bookstore a few years ago and purchased a beautiful mint hardback copy 1st printing of Carrie for $7.99 because one of the book buyers thought it was a bookclub edition and therefore not worth anything! I ran out of that store after paying for it! Amazing find!

The trade audio books (tapes) of Desperation and The Regulators were abridged. I refused to buy them and eventually both books were re-issued in full.

I have a Salems Lot which I think might be a book club edition...a bit smaller than a HB today. Any identifying markings to see if its a first edition? Doubleday Edition; only has a copyright date 1975 and acknowledgements on the 'info' page. Thanks :)

The true first edition first printing of Salems' Lot has a price on the dust jacket, states "First Edition" on the copyright page and has the code Q37 in the gutter of page 439. See:

Thanks so much for the info John.

Well damn! While old, I guess it's not a first edition. It has 409 pages and no "First Edition" on the copyright page, just says:

copyright 1975 by Stephen King

Printed in the United States of America

No print run numbers, nada. Oh well, still a GREAT book!
