When I was a kid growing up in rural Pennsylvania we always had the butter dish out on the table, never in the fridge. We never got sick from it (that I know of anyway). I stopped leaving it out when I became an adult but now this article makes me think maybe I'll start leaving it out on the table as I hate trying to put cold, hard butter on toast, etc. What about you guys?

I have always kept butter in the fridge.
I usually use Kerrygold and it tends to get too soft/melty when left out.

And the trick is to slice all the pats of butter just before putting your bread in the toaster. I do this with every food I put butter on (I'm a butter-holic) and melts nicely every time.

That's good to know. I Love Butter. I'm sure at room temperature it would maintain a whipped and creamy texture without getting too melty. I used to eat hard firm butter straight when I was little, by itself. My mom said that she would see my fingerprints in it and know that I had randomly 'grabbed butter with my fingers. I don't eat it by itself any longer but I do pile it on, and also me and my sis used to use a stick of butter as a tanning agent.

When I was a wee child in the 1940's we went to my Great Grandmother's farm and she had a milk bucket on the dining table (fresh from the milking) I guess. I asked my mother if I could have a glass of it and she told me "no." I didn't find out until years later about pasteurization. I remember from that time a lot of food items people left out but not anymore.

No matter what we cover it with it would start to melt. Also we had a black tom cat when I was growing up and no matter what you
cover it with or put it in he knock it off and lick away. After finding lick marks we put it in the fridge.
