While not exactly a craft, my passion is baking. Especially when the weather gets cold. I made this French apple tart as a practice run for an upcoming dinner party mid February. I'm very happy with how it turned out, plus it was quite tasty. The recipe is from America's test Kitchen/Cooks' Country/Cook's Illustrated.

That is a work of art! I wouldn't want to cut into it, it's so pretty but I think my taste buds would overrule that thought. It looks yummy. Was it hard to do or just time-consuming to get all those slices placed just right? I have some apples I need to use up and that might be a way to do it.

Thanks!
It's really more time consuming than difficult. The apples just sort of fall into place; it's the cooking of the separate components that take a bit of time. Once it comes to putting it together though, it's not too difficult at all. Here is the recipe; be sure to watch the embedded video for help in assembling.

Edit: looks like Cook's Illustrated won't allow me to paste the link! Just use Google and search for "French apple tart Cook's illustrated" and you should be able to find it.

The site must have it blocked somehow that the link won't work as Spidey tried to post it as well but it won't show up--at least for me. I did find it with a search, though, and I see what you mean about the steps and assembly. Might be worth it, though. :smile2:

Absolutely gorgeous! I wonder if it would work well with a pear/apple mixture? I love that for winter tarts, but some recipes don't work. Might have to give it a try.

My daughter loved the quilt so she has been deemed quilt worthy and can keep it. Here's what it looked like finished--or most of it as I couldn't fit it all in camera frame. I'd asked my older daughter if she would like a quilt for xmas next year since I'd made one for her brother and sister and she told me she had enough quilts. That was before she saw this one and then decided maybe she should let me finish the one she's been working on. :smile2:
Wow - so much intricate stitching - that is very impressive - a true family heirloom! :love_heart::love_heart:

I love to bake too! - that is one lovely looking tart - do you make cookies and decorate those, too?

The recipe calls for parcooking the apples first, so you would have to make sure the pears you use can stand up to being cooked twice.
Speaking of pears, here's something I made for dessert as part of my Christmas dinner menu. It's a Martha Stewart recipe: Pear and Frangipane Tart.

Does anyone have any advice? I am fairly new to crocheting. The afghan I am working on is made with red heart yarn and the yarn is very "stiff." I am wondering if I can do something with the washing machine to fix this after I am done. And if so how would I dry it? AND.....do the colors tend to run? I am doing rainbow granny squares and am worried about the red running into the orange and yellow. Thanks in advance for any tips or advice anyone has!
I've never had Red Heart yarn run, even when I've put a dark color next to white or cream. It's a good yarn to work with as a beginner, and will soften up when washed :)

I saw that recipe! Yours is gorgeous. Yeah, that's what I was thinking on the pears, too. Barely ripe Bosc might be able to take the pre cooking and still stand in the tart pan. I definitely plan to try this :)
