Totally agree on the waste front. We're trying to teach the Tiny Blonde Tyrant not to take more food than she can eat (she's still pretty terrible at it, since she isn't even three yet). Working as a chef must be cool, though! I dig food. With a serious digging. :pig_food:
I usually worked at French restaruants just to keep my hand in. My fulltime job was running a homeless shelter. That is why the waste appalled me so very much. Some folks would love the wasted food....so would their children.

I'm gonna inject a cynical note in here. It's really easy to pound our chests and go YEAH CANADA IS NUMBER ONE! And I am very proud and fortunate to have been born and lived in Canada my whole life. We are a rich, peaceful nation, and we have much to be thankful for. But we should never equate the fact that others admire us with the belief that we are perfect. And we also never need to be smug about our good fortune. Keep in mind, this poll doesn't measure our "goodness" -- it measures how good we are perceived to be.

If I say much more, I'll risk moving this over into the Politics thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Don't rain on my parade.

It is not often Canada comes out on top of anything. And there are reasons, legitimate reasons, we are perceived to be good. Some of those reasons go back many years, but not all.

Yep our money is kinda colorful and our coins are lovely. Come on over where there is poutine and good beer and free medical care.
I never will understand why Americans are opposed to single-payer healthcare. ::shrug::
When I was in Toronto, I actually met a guy (Canadian) who had broken his arm playing backyard football in Upstate New York. He made his friends drive him *back across the border* rather than risk the mess that is the American emergency medical system. Nice guy, though. Took me to Tim Hortons. ;)
I know people who live near the border (places like Detroit) that routinely cross the border for health care.

Whoa, hey, Canada is awesome. Went there a lot when I was a kid. Ontario is my kinda province. French fries and gravy. Water so clean--drink right out of the river. Wolverine.

The only thing between me and Canada? Michigan.

I like Canada. But I like most places I've been in. Well, Jamaica and Mexico had their spots. And if I never see LAX again, it'll be too soon. But anyway, yeah, I like Canada. The Canadian border guard crossing in was a humorous, polite man. The US border guard crossing back was a grumpy bureaucrat. There was one guy at a coffee counter who sneered at me being American. I out-Canadianed him and was polite back.

Hey, the spring water in the mountains is clean, too, but "clean" still contains giardia. Ain't foolin' me.

I used to have this book of sportsmen's adventures, twenty-three tales of true survival, or something along those lines. It talked a lot about Canada, how there were parts of the forests that still haven't been explored by man. (this book was a bit old.) And it talked a LOT about how great the fishing was. If you listened to the stories in that book, it's impossible to get skunked in Canadian creeks and rivers. It talked a lot about black flies, too, and about rogue bears, and people getting lost; but all I could ever think was: I wanted to go to Canada just so I could hike through the uncharted woods and catch as many trout as I could carry.

Then, as an adult, I found out about Canadian health care, and I'm like...I should move there!
