OMG, this would cost you not a cent in Canada. This couple from, out west here, was billed close to a million bucks when they had a baby in Hawaii. Stay home if you are not well or in the family way. This is crazy! It cost a million dollars????? How can you manage to survive, I wonder? This is Tommy Douglas land ,thank you God. I feel bad knowing that folks in the States have to pay so very much. Not fair at all.

Thanks to my adenomyosis, that is one previously vital organ that is now missing!

To be serious, though, if travelling in the States travel agents always recommend taking out lots of extra medical insurance and even extra insurance on your vehicle if you plan to drive down there!

Canadians should just stay home, period! I'm just kidding! :lurve: On a side note, this is another example of Obama-care! Just kidding! Hello? Is this thing on? H-ell-o?
Click on the link- I don't know if Obama is responsible or just the extremely weird circumstances surrounding the whole experience - keeping a baby alive at such a young age is very admirable but I hope the poor kid does not end up with severe health problems in the future as a result.

Okay - I guess I spoke to soon (as usual) - she says that she did buy extra insurance. It just turned out that she had her baby somewhere between 24 and 27 weeks (in other words extremely premature) and it had to spend two months in the NICU!

Yikes! poor kid

Even born prematurely this is still an outlandish amount to charge. Crazy medical 'industry'.

And to think that if that happened here, that lil momma would just be complaining about having to leave her babby in the hospital for a time. She would not have to pay as much as the price of an ice-cream cone. Are we not blessed.
Has a patriotic moment and starts to sing...O Canada....with toque pressed to heart*

Doncha just love Tommy Douglas, Neesy. That unsung hero and Keifer Sutherland's grandfather.
I was reading the article in your link - some of the comments are cute i.e.

"She should have told them she was an immigrant and it would have been all free"

or

"If she doesn't pay her bill, will the Americans repossess the baby?" :adoration::heheh:

p.s. Yes - I have he heard of Tommy Douglas of course and he is the guy who came up with the idea of health care for everyone way back when.

Can I bring my fur-lined Jockstrap?
Gawd yes, we are waiting with baited breath!
This thread is reminding me of a lady I met when I live in Fort McMurray in the northeastern part of Alberta. This is oilsand country. Lots of jobs, etc. I met this young momma in the pharmacy. She was from New York state. She met and married an Alberta man and came here with him. I have never met anyone so happy about being here. She had a little daughter. Now she could get the child tax credit every year...lotsa money from the government and the family allowance cheque every month. Now she had free medicare. But best of all, her husband had finally gotten on at Suncor...Oil refinery. That meant free drug plan and dental and all good things. He was an electician and would probably make 50 bucks an hour. Canada..........yes. She would kick and scream if she had to go back. I never saw a person who appreciated where she was so very much. Made me sorta ashamed for taking things for granted. Even the poorest of us has access to medical care and such without paying.
