I am listening to Duma Key for the second time, and I just realized that Tina Garibaldi is actually based on Carlie Brucia, whose video-captured abduction from behind a Sarasota, FL car wash was shown over and over on local and National TV. I live in the Tampa area, and while listening to the audio book, those images of Carlie's abduction, of the look on her face when Smith grabbed her wrist and dragged her out of sight, slammed right into the front seat of my memories. Candy Brown was Joseph Peter Smith, her killer. I'm sure many people have made this connection. I found Brown's punishment in Duma Key quite more satisfying than the true fate of Smith, who still rots like last years cabbage on death row.
