At work today, a young lady asked me to recommend a book a Stephen King fan might like that isn't a Stephen King book.
I was all about making recommendations and the suggestions ran the gamut from science fiction to classic lit and some poetry.
I asked her why she was asking. She told me she had never read anyone else, and she felt a little like she was cheating on him by looking for other authors.
I said he would most likely be more than happy to know he had perked your love of reading.

It had never occurred to me that someone may feel that way. Do you ever feel like you can't listen to Snoop Dogg because you love Mozart? I'm not judging, I'm just asking.
Do you ever feel that way?

I've never felt like I was cheating by reading other authors than SK. Even though he's the King of my heart, there are so many good and great authors out there, so many great books, that one would miss out on a great deal of wonderful words if one read just one author.

When it comes to music, I do feel weird listening to a song that's terribly mainstream, or that is extremely popular. It's like I feel uncomfortable trying to like what everyone else likes since I tend to be uneasy going along with the tide. I'm much happier struggling against the waves and pushing out to sea while everyone else is riding the surf towards the shore. In other words, if most people like something, I tend to have trouble liking it too. I just have to be different, almost for difference's sake. Which is not always good (according to my ex :) ).

Nah. I read everything. Some easy, fun stuff, some dark and disturbing stuff, some bend your brain until it almost breaks stuff. Stories for your head, stories for your heart. It's all out there. You can grow anything and go anywhere in the garden of your mind (thank you, Mr. Rogers :D).

Nah - SK himself reads a variety. My TBR pile is all over the place. It's just how I roll. Whatever grabs me. I really like finding unknown authors that are good. I like to say "I knew them when...."

Today I'm browsing the thrift stores looking for short story collections.
Quoting myself to say: sometimes I buy books for their pretty covers. If it's got a bird on it, I buy it. Oddly short story collections often have birds on the cover.

Pretty, eh? And good stories within.

My love of reading came before my love of King.I like many different genres. But if offered a new King book over any other new book I would always choose King.
Interesting question you have asked here.I always wonder if people who have only ever read King books are people who rarely read.I don't mean that to sound judgy. I just can't imagine a bookworm only reading King. That would be alot of rereading! And......so many other books!
