The Cleveland Indians have decided to remove the Chief Wahoo image as their primary logo. Native American groups have resented the way they have been portrayed by professional sports teams. To be honest, the way Indians are portrayed like this has always made me cringe. Any other ethnic group would not get away with being portrayed like this.

We have lots of First Nations up here in Canada (especially around Winnipeg and Manitoba). Not just here, actually, but in every province. I am glad they are showing respect to Natives by doing this.

Personally I find the chop used by Braves fans much more offensive.

...then the Braves, Redskins etc., should follow the PC route....personally, I've never found it to be offensive-but I'm not Native American...never thought it was dishonoring their proud heritage...they could come up with a "Rednecks" or "Cracker" mascot and it wouldn't offend me in the slightest...sorry, but I have thought for years that people have made way to big of a deal about this...just my opinion...

Exactly, not_nadine - make him look more dignified or proud, not like something that is being ridiculed or made to look stupid.

Well, if the team is "Indians" shouldn't he be wearing a turban? :nudge:

I am part Micmac, and I think all this stuff is rather silly. But then I grew up with my dad calling me his papoose, and referring to my mom as his squaw and we never felt insulted by that. <shrug>

I'm Native American. Can I have a say?

I understand why some are offended, but what is more offensive is how much time we spend on debating anything to do with sports in the first place. Congressional hearings about baseball? Just a waste of time. So is this.

This is more offensive to me: you can't proclaim a native religion unless you're native. And that means a CDIB carrying native. So effectively, NA religions are oppressed in that no one from outside can join them. Why is this? It's religious oppression specifically targeting NA religions. That seems much worse to me than a goofy logo.

I agree that there shouldn't be congressional hearing about this, but I think this issue underlies how Native Americans are thought of. If there were a logo like this made of black, Latino or Jewish people, no one would stand for it. But if someone does this with Native Americans, it goes unpunished and people say "just get over it". It's a blatant double standard.

What about white people? Why are whites always left out of these types of conversations? Are we not a race as well? That being said, I would have zero problem with a goofy looking white dude as a mascot. PC is way out of hand, if you ask me.

If someone who was black called a white person an ethnic slur, it doesn't have the same sting if it were the other way around. I don't think anyone should be getting insulted.

...my brother, you speak true-but we live in an effed up world that seems to feel such "debates" take precedence over the core of most issues...plus, as far as I know I have nary a drop of the "First People's" blood, but I DO have deep respect and admiration for their beliefs and way of living-I'd much rather embrace that-than how stupid or not Chief Wahoo looks...

...exactly, any ethnicity or religion should be open to "mascothood"...I personally think the "Dribbling Druids" would be cool as hell as a team name...

I don't have a problem with mascots like the Seminoles, Black Hawks or Braves. It's just the Cleveland Indians mascot and Redskins team name that push it.

What goofy white dude mascots are there?

(This is a serious question. I hate sports.)

I don't think the name "Braves" is offensive...but I think the tomahawk action of the fans is, or I guess I should clarify as I thinks it's more offensive then the names Indians or Redskins.

    <picking chin up off floor>

That is really offensive, and not in a petty kind of way. I don't think it's true in Canada, but having been raised Catholic, I'm not sure. I do know someone who would know and LOVES talking native rights. I plan to check with her. (I mean about Canada. I have no doubt you are correct about US.)
