...I have enjoyed everything I have ever read...which is a considerable amount-he blends erotica, horror, comedy and lots of other ingredients well....the only thing I ever took issue with, is he was a bit to English-centric in some of his staging...familiar turf for him, but not to us Colonial Barbarians....

One of my friends feels this way: (direct quote and he loves both of them) " Stephen King is the better writer but Barker's imagination is bigger" I don't necessarily agree as I think King has a very active imagination but I can see where Barker does go a liiiittle more out there.
I still have some Barker novels to read that I haven't yet. I'm looking forward to reading Scarlet Gospels.

I remember when the movie "Hellraiser" came out - I went to the Cabana
if your town didn't have one: a theatre with 'cabanas' in the walls -you could smoke whatever your pleasure and drink and fool around, and buzz in some delivery
with some friends to see it because SK said "I have seen the future of horror..." and we were all psyched about it. I was a little let down. And then I tried to read Clive Barker when I was 18, and the Books of Blood thoroughly confused me - I couldn't follow them. I'm not saying he's not good, maybe I should give him another try as an adult. But we all thought Cujo, Carrie, Salems Lot, et al were waaayyyy better and more frightening than Hellraiser ever thought about being.

Can I go to the movies with you?

Cabal is very good. His imagination is second only to King's. And his style is at times highly refined, literary. For example, for "slaughterhouse," he will write "abattoir."
At one time he was considered the "future of horror." Coincidentally, bookworms destroyed my copy of The Books of Blood.

Eeek! I did not know bookworms were a thing other than those of us who like books. How apropos!

Weaveworld is one of the most intense books I've read. If you stick with it it's worth it, but I had to concentrate pretty hard to make sure I caught everything as I read it......course it doesn't take much to make the wheels in my head sputter....

Devoured everything Clive wrote up to around Imajica. He went alittle too much into fantasy for my liking. I thought 'Hellraiser' was one of those films that really pushed the envelope. I thought it was better than the story it was based on and I liked the story! His story 'In The Hills, The Cities' is a mind-blowing classic. His novel The Damnation Game is my favorite. He started getting a bit too 'high-falutin' (and fantasy driven) with his writing after a while so I stopped reading him.
