Close Call: Solar storm almost toasted Earth

God, I hope if it happens, we don't end up in a bad episode of Revolution!
It wouldn't knock out the whole world's grid. A lot would depend on the placement of the Earth. The "huge" event in 1989 only affected Quebec. The majority of our planet is actually ocean and unpopulated areas, and only small percentage of populated land would be in the line of fire for a given time. So that 12% figure (1 in 8) needs to be further reduced by other factors.
Not to mention we are now in the weakest solar cycle in many years. The usual ebb and flow of these typically sees a long period of calm after a series of CMEs. The real thing to watch to determine if increased solar activity will be coming is the amount, size and intensity of sunspots and sunquakes.

I just read this today and thought "why wait 2 years to tell us, why not the day after it missed?" But then I thought "you know, I bet people get scared enough from this news even now, that they start building apocalypse bunkers. And I bet it's in America"
This has happened before and will almost certainly happen again, the aurora borialis displays would be breathtakingly spectacular, last time it happened there were reports of it being seen in southern Italy. So all of little old England would see it. The downside would be things like life support machines and other medical equipment, antivenom and insulin fridges, as vampirelily pointed out, back up generators will only last so long, and it won't be a quick fix.
Riot, this wouldn't kill everyone instantly, but if we get hit by a gamma ray burst, which is a possibility - an extremely small one - that would be curtains, and those who survive would be dosed in lethal radiation due to the dilapidation of the ozone layer.
Anyway, cheery thoughts.
