The only real background we got of TV Toomey was his flashbacks, and his father was a bigger nut and a louder screamer than he was :p His book father was way more of a presence and somewhat terrifying in his own right. It was good to see his father in the movie, but so much got missed, and his mother was never mentioned which is a shame because IMO she was at least 50% responsible for the way Mr. Toomey turned out..
And that is why it's very rare for a film adaptation to be better than the book. Mr. Toomey's mother was at least 50% of his problem.

I think the 90s miniseries really sucked tbh. They changed way too much, like Ben's mummy and the sewer. They also changed the characters too much. I didn't like how adult Ben wasn't even in Nebraska.

I have my reservations about this new movie as well. Not liking the period change from the 50s to the 80s. Kids in the 80s were much different than kids in the 50s. They didn't do stuff like build clubhouses in the woods and play in dumps for one thing. Also, the casting seems off again. It looks like they ruined Beverly, she's supposed to have long pretty red hair, as described in the book. Not the short chop-job the actress playing her has. I'll see the movie but my hopes aren't very high for it being that good.

my biggest problem with the adults was how they spent the whole movie whining about how they wanted to skip town. not even close to how it happened in the book. as far as beverly goes, people get way too hung up on appearance when it comes to casting. unless we're talking someone with a really crazy unique look, worry over what someone's hair looks like is very secondary to whether the character is played well

I grew up in the 80's (in Maine) and we built clubhouses and played in the woods and played at the dump. When I first read IT in the 80's, I totally related to the LC.

Also, there is a pic of Beverly with long hair, it seems her cutting it short is plot point.

Well it wasn't a plot point in the book and her hair was the subject of Ben's haiku, that's talked about throughout the story. I'm sorry but It is one of my all time favorite books, I was highly disappointed in the 90s miniseries and I don't have high hopes for this movie either.

Casting should be everything, you want the characters to come to life the way they are portrayed in the book. And these bad changes happen way too often with adaptations of Stephen's books.

Same here. We also had several "meeting places" (one of them a very large clearing under pine trees that was completely hidden from view...it was really cool!) and spent 90% of our lives outdoors. I too identified with the LC, and even though some kids still go outside I think the 80's was the end of the non-techy generation FWIU.

I rarely see any kids outside 'playing' anymore. Technology really changed childhoods.

At the risk of sounding like I'm 83 years old, it really is a shame. We had so many days filled with bike rides and swimming until we were exhausted and playing tag and hide and seek, such fun filled times. We could make a game out of almost anything. We had Nickelodeon and the NES and the Sega Mega drive and all that, but that was there for snowy or rainy days.

and personality matters far more than looks. it's a 1000 page book, if they have to snip some things, including a haiku about her hair, it'll be understandable. there are other ways to depict crushes
