If the illustration's background is black and the picture/writing is white (like in GNT's image), you should be able to use the illustration as is - the black background will print out black on the transfer paper (which might be a different shade of black than the t-shirt though). Just be sure to use t-shirt transfer paper made for dark colored t-shirts so the white areas will appear white. I think they're thicker than normal transfer paper though so the t-shirt won't be very soft where the transfer paper is.

This is one of those times I'd use a professional t-shirt company who can silk-screen the white image onto a black t-shirt.

Actually, his picture is a good example.

I may be making 5 of them. That’s to big a waste of black ink to print it with the black background. Getting them done professionally will be about $35 each. Bit to pricey.

You have,no bounce said it, to use t-shirt transfer paper.
You have to Mirror the Image before Printing but you will not get anything on the paper with a basic CMYK inkjet or laser printer.
The CMYK color mixing is subtractive, meaning that it requires the base that is being colored to have all colors

Try getting out, then getting back in.

Ummmmm... That sounds like good advice... I think... if I understood it lol.

....was just being my usual nimrod self, but I'm glad I somehow fell into the puddle of help....

Awwwwww... I had been terribly impressed by your ability to find an image to illustrate what Anna Marie was trying to do :) I might ask to borrow your puddle occasionally :)
