I'm thinking of entering a writing contest. Have any of you ever done that? What was your experience with it? This seems to be a pretty big one and the prize money is good but I'm a little leery still. It does say they only retain a "one time right to publish" and then it's mine again. Which is a good thing, it's a chapter out of the book that I'm doing the final edit on that can stand alone. Let me know if you guys have ever entered one and what kind of experience you had with them. Thanks so much!

Miss you guys! I've really worked hard on the historical research on this. I hope when it comes out you guys can see that and love the story as much as I do! Hope you're all well and had a great holiday season! Love and hugs! <3

I have no experience in this area so I don't know if it's common for someone offering a writing contest to ask you to allow them to do anything at all with your work. If it were me, unless to the contrary I heard from someone in the know, I wouldn't submit anything to them.

Thanks guys! I have read the rules and regulations very carefully. It will be published once and that's it. I'm using a chapter of my book No Mercy for this as it stands alone nicely. It's funny, I wrote it in about 15 minutes when I was very angry at someone. You see, I'm trying to help my city get more tourism through the paranormal. (If you don't know already, I run a paranormal team in Massachusetts.) This woman who runs a historic home that is now a museum didn't even want to take a few moments to hear what I can do for her place. She said she was too busy to take time out of her schedule for something she knows nothing about. Yeah, I'm sure she has to deal with at least one tourist a week! And that's the story with our tourism. This city really needs help, but it doesn't know how to take it. But anyway, I was mad and I killed her real slow and proper and this is the chapter I wrote that day. It may end up in the final draft that I'm working on as we speak and it may not. I have taken the time to do some similar characters along the way to bring the victims to life a bit more, or at least I hope so.

But it's short and not-so-sweet so I figured it would be perfect. I was a bit worried about losing my rights to it so I read the contest rules several times. The rules state it's only that one time right so I should be fine.

I also need things to put in my query letter when I start marketing. I have good education and background but not a lot of books. I've only written one so far and it's not the same genre, it's non-fiction so I don't think it counts for much. I've got 30 years of experience in the paranormal field but I'm sure that's not going to count for much when I try to market. I thought if I won this it would help make me more of a prospect to agents/publishers. Thanks so much guys! Have a great Sunday!
