But, perhaps because I am old school...I like the feel of a paper book in my hands. Someone gave me an e-reader for Christmas a couple of years ago. I hate to sound so unappreciative, but they may as well had given me a fruitcake that had been re-gifted a dozen times.
:pudency:

Oh I totally agree - there is nothing like a "real" book. Although I am picky even with them. I hate reading a hard-back, has to be a paper-back on the right paper and in the right format with the right font.

My favourite book probably is Earthly Powers and I had a beautiful old 80s copy in a thick thick paper-back (imagine the old 70s one volume paperback Lord of the Rings, maybe a bit thinner.) I lost it somewhere and no subsequent copy has been the same.

E-books do though have their place. I brought one for Mrs K which she didn't get on with as she is like you, it has to be a "real" book. But if we are going somewhere in Europe on two weeks holiday and trying just to travel with only hand luggage (much cheaper but very small allowance), I can load her Kindle with books before we go and then even if I run out I can download more to see me home.

Reading the Bazaar of Bad Dreams and each story has a short introduction by SK. At the end of the intro to Premium Harmony, SK said this: "The humor here is black, but in my opinion, that's often the best kind. Because-dig it-when it comes to death, what can you do but laugh?"

Does anyone else find this a bit disconcerting?

Why not laugh at something that one has no control over? We're all gonna die at some point, right? Can't stop the inevitable.

The Darkside of the Moon (England really)
I know I've mentioned this before but I found the shining average at best. I much preferred the film. It was so slow paced for me and quite boring at times. For the most part it was just jack Danny and Wendy.

It's a similar reason why I didn't make it very far into misery before leaving it. I know it's basically a double hander between Annie and Paul - Annie is evil, sick and twisted, Paul was just a douche and I wasn't caring if Annie tortured him or not. I had nobody to route for.

I know it gets a bit of flack, but I liked the girl who loved Tom Gordon (which is surprising because I don't usually care to much for a small cast).

2 characters in the stand that I didn't like that there seems to be a lot of love for are frannie and Larry. They both annoyed me up until about 3 quarters of the way in.

I thought 'The Body' and 'The Long Walk' were very average.
I was the same with the body. I think I built my hopes a little too high because I loved Stand By Me so much. I prefer the film myself.

I keep looking at the long walk when I'm looking for my next read, that and from a Buick 8. In the end, I keep choosing something different.

I confess that I like S.K. earlier works a whole lot better and the newer stuff.....gosh that's sounds so gruff, sorry. I hope the seasoned veterans here will know what I'm talking about when I say this, there used to be a part of S.K. stories like a vein that went much deeper, never mind cross referencing characters from one book to the next (I really like that too). But it seems like those creative veins are weaker now or altogether gone. In his newer works the characters seem to stay right on top, I miss when S.K. would take the reader/character down a dark hole into the deepest parts of their secret/past/younger lives, and then let you up for some air. Like Lisey's Story, when Scott takes you back in time when he was a child, his childhood was a dark and scary place (brother in the basement), but then S.K. lets you gasp for air in Scott's present life. The Dark Tower Series, each one of the characters have real sustenance, where they come from, where they've been etc. Pet Sematary when Jud takes you back in time and tells the reader/doctor how his dog died and came back, or how the neighbor man buried his son who was killed in the war up there and he came back....those deep veins carry some pretty scary stuff! I could make example after example, sometimes it's like S.K. has written a story inside of a story...probably I'm not explaining myself very well, and maybe it's because the older books are some of my personal favorites, or maybe I've changed over the years....has anyone else noticed this?

While I like his older novels myself, I think with his newer works he is actually creating more believable characters- he shows us all of their individual flaws and strengths and he doesn't really have to take us far down a dark hole to show us what these 'people' are like. His stories have changed, he no longer gives us the vampires, psychics, werewolves, etc. Now, the monsters are human and they are worse than the others for the simple fact that they are human. Just like us. I do think that the 'hey, keep reading, now look at this, and this, and this!!!!!' feel has been gone from his newer novels, at least for me, there's no longer this underlying 'push' from King to read more, more, more of the tale. There's no other author that I've read that can show me a mostly fully developed character in a paragraph or even a few sentences like Steve can. He is a master at that.

I am re watching the episodes of Sons of Anarchy, and just watched the episode in season three when Gemma kills her dad's housekeeper and they call in Mr. King to dispose of the body....my thoughts are A. Mr. King did a super job playing his character, and B. when he grabs the dead housekeepers b**bs I couldn't help but burst out laughing, my confession here is this, If I were in her shoes playing the dead housekeeper and S.K. is measuring my body and grabs my b**bs there is no way in I would be able to keep a straight face....I would've laughed until tears were running down my face and they would've fired me for wasting so many takes on one scene....still laughing lmao!!
