I don't know why you think of me, but I'm awfully glad you do, and to post such terrific photos.

I know you like them.

and . . .again I realize why I don't come here much anymore. The place reminds me of my sisters. Very much. Something that I don't like much. When I try to be nice I'm kicked in my nuts when I show my heart.

I will always come back.

I wish you would come here more, I miss talking to you, Char... but I understand the way you feel.
(I don't think Pegasus meant it to be a ball kicking... I just think maybe it was a kind of 'I didn't realise I was special'?)
The images and quotes you share with us are so thought-provoking... and they come right from your heart. ♥

On Jan. 18, 1984, Nan Wood Graham, 83, looks at the painting "American Gothic," painted by her brother Grant Wood. Nan Wood was 30 years old in 1930 when she posed for her brother's famous painting. The man in the painting was Dr. B.H. McKeeby, dentist to Nan and Grant.

Stopping at a Farmer's Market in Kealakakua, we found an amazing artist. He makes these:

That is the result of lightning striking the wood. The artist, Dave Hatfield, explained that (while a bit buzzed on bourbon) he and a friend were watching a thunderstorm from the lanai when they saw lightning strike a nearby tree. After the storm, they went to examine it and saw dendritic veins of charred wood making beautiful patterns. They decided to try to replicate it. They took a piece of wood, embedded a nail at either end and put it out on the beach during the next storm. They got great results and without the risk that this method creates. They tried different woods and got different results depending on the softness of the wood. Then, Dave tried filling the lines in with colored epoxy and liked the result. So he fills most of the pieces with different colors, some even glows in the dark!

Anyway, we were enthralled and delighted by these. There were stools, tables, shelves... but, since we couldn't pack any of those, I was drawn to a 6x12" piece of ironwood. It looks like a Hawaiian petroglyph to me. As soon as Dave gets a website up, we'll be buying more of his work.

Colorized pictures from history. And it's not like when they used to colorize black and white films. These look like they were originally in color, and it makes these people seem so much more real. Really great collection.

Those are incredible. I loved the one with Lincoln meeting with General McClellan and the one of Lincoln close-up.
