I liked The Abominable (you can find my review on Onyx Reviews). It has an amazing amount of forward momentum for a book that talks in so much detail about the mechanics of mountain climbing. The book is not at all about what you think it might be, though, so be prepared for that!

So- there aren't going to be any sex scenes with a Yeti is what you're saying?

I am not a sci-fi reader, but I did enjoy the Hyperion books. From what I could tell (since I am not a sci-fi reader), Simmons has created a future universe that is very believable with one of the most horrific villians (The Shrike) you are likely to come across in any genre. Very well written and great story line.

You know what? - I have never read a Dan Simmons book. All I know about Simmons is that it's the second name of Gene (of Kiss fame) and that there is a smiley in the list to choose from.

When you pick it, it comes up as :smiley_simmons: (hover over the smiley for the answer) ;)

There's a lot to like about Dan Simmons. Summer of Night and A Winter's Haunting are very Stephen King like, and very well done. He turned his hand to scifi, and proceeded to write the most popular and influential series since Asimov's The Foundation. More recently, The Terror, omg what a masterpiece of horror.

Nuttin, honey! =D - well, guess I would have to order a book from the library as I don't own any of his books :big_money:(Do you collect his books, too, KRF?)

I have cathedral ceilings in my house and built this bookcase above the door in my bedroom that opens into my bathroom. It was just wasted space up there, so I thought 'Why not?'. I didn't stain the boards or anything, they're all natural, although I probably will stain or varnish them at some point. All of the Simmons books are signed except for the ARC's. I still need to aquire a couple of Simmons titles, so it's not complete (yet!). I have Abominable but it's in my TBR pile. The nice thing about collecting Simmons is you can usually find all of his books at good prices still. If he keeps getting on the best seller lists that may (will) change. All of the Jance books are also signed.

Beautiful books and case. I like the unstained look, it's pretty.

Good idea! I built boxes over some of my windows, curtain rod hidden inside, shelf space above...but looking at your use of space I thought of another area where I could stash my keep...I have a shelf in the breakfast nook with only a plant there now, a vine that is growing like a weed. I could put some of my keep there...that, or add another shelf above the one already present.

Hi Walter! I did the box-over-the-curtain-rod thing at my old place. It sure made a difference! I put wallpaper over it to tie it in with what was on the opposite wall- looked really nice.

I had a dream the other night that Dan Simmons wrote a Magic School Bus novel...

Thinking about jumping on the Dan Simmons train. Think I'll start with Summer of Night, but not sure yet.

Summer Of Night is a great place to start with Simmons. It's a great book. King said of it 'if not the best, then one of the best three horror novels in the last five years' (back of the hardback edition).
