There is a story in his Lovedeath collection about some weird $hit in Calcutta too.

Oh really? What’s with his fascination with Calcutta? :numbness:

I just finished Song of Kali last night, I gotta say I was a bit disappointed.. A lot of questions were left unanswered . I enjoyed it, don’t get me wrong, but still .. that “happy ending” with no explanations about what happened to Das or why that happened to the baby got me a bit upset. :grumpy:

I just checked my copy of Lovedeath and the story was called Dying in Bangkok. My mistake.

Still has weird sexual acts in the story though.

I'm really losing myself in this one too. I put off starting this one for awhile as it sounded kind of dry but it is very captivating.

I guess I shouldn't expect any less out of Dan.
You gotta keep in mind that this story is being told thru the eyes of Wilkie Collins who was a heavy abuser of drugs back then. Strange things indeed......

Dan Simmons has a new book- The Fifth Heart- coming out this month (release date is March 25th). He is touring to promote it but only at 5 or 6 cities, mostly in CA. It's not going to be a big tour this time, sadly. The info is up on his website now and most of the places he's going will let you order it and have it shipped also. He's not coming to the Northwest this time so I had to order a copy. It states on the website info that he can sign and date it and possibly, if you would like, do a cartoon or doodle for you!

I recently finished The Fifth Heart -- it's an interesting concept. He has often used historical figures in his fiction, but this time he combines a historical figure with a fictional one! I've never met Dan in person, though we've corresponded off and on for many years. But he's coming to Houston on the book tour and I plan to meet him for the first time there.

Getting to see him in person is always a treat! He has such amazing and fascinating stories. He is quite soft spoken, but he knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat with his talks (mostly). This last tour he did for The Abominable wasn't his best, from my vantage point at the back of the room, with all seats taken and me standing, I could see him start to lose his audience when he was discussing some of the technical things used in mountain climbing. I've been to see him about 6 times over the years and he's always gracious to everyone for coming and pleasant. I take my Dark Harvest edition of Carrion Comfort each time I see him and he's always happy to sign and date it and draws a little doodle. I just have to remember to tell him that it's become a 'thing' for the two of us. He won't mind a bit if you have a stack of books to get signed and wait till everyone else has got theirs book signed. It also would give you the chance to have a good long talk with him if you wanted. Bev, maybe you could hit him up to do a bibliography on him? I don't think anyone has a complete list of what/when/where his stuff has been published.

Anyone read Winter Haunting? Made a visit to my SF-bookstore and made an impulse buy. I can't go into a bookstore without buying a book. They are deathtraps!! Said to be a ghoststory by Simmons. Any opinions on it?

A very good book, but best enjoyed if you read Summer of Night first. It's a kind of sequel to that one.

Dan Simmons? Pretty good. Haven't read much. The Terror, excellent. Drood--good stuff, drags a bit. Got Black Hills on the shelf but ain't read yet. Soon as I see a copy of The Abominable I'll probably read it--love that historic stuff he does.

Tried that there Hyperion. Nah, not for me.
I think you're going to like The Fifth Heart then. I read the first three books in the Hyperion saga, but sci-fi isn't my cup o' tea either.

Winter Haunting is very subtle with its horror, which for some reason creeped me out worse than a hardcore horror story. Good choice.
