So I was curious on how people feel about the Viking re-issues vs the original Grant editions.

I currently have First Edition Vikings (except Wastelands) and the Grant editions of 5, 6, and 7.

What I like about this combination is the closely matched dustjackets. To my knowledge, Viking is also the only way to get The Gunslinger Revised.

But it seems like the most diehard of collectors only want the Grant versions of the whole series.

What say you?

I vastly prefer the Grant editions. Those are the true firsts.

I also prefer the Grant Gunslinger. I don't like the revisions that were made for the Viking edition.

Slowly but surely I would love to get all true firsts of the series including the Artist Editions of 5, 6 and 7. But man oh man. Gunslinger true 1st sells for like $1000+ Yikes.

Nothing comes close to the original Grant editions. All I gotta do is open the first Tower book, smell those strangely wonderful pages, and I'm transported to the time when I first had that book in my hands and I can feel the joy again that I felt the first time I read it.....

I had never checked my DT series for Grant. I do have three - DT #5, #6, #7.
The odds must be pretty low to find the others....

I believe 5, 6 and 7 are only available from Grant. But the first 4 were re-issued by Viking. So I currently have 1st editions of the Viking Re-issues of 1-4 and 1st editions of the Grant 5-7. Grant also released Artist editions of 5-7 I think. But I have yet to go down that road.

My copies of the Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three, and Waste Lands are from Grant and came in a 3-Book Gift Set. Does anyone know what editions the books were that came in the set?

Grant did both signed limited and artist editions. They worked in conjunction with Scribner to do the trade hardcover editions of books 5-7. Grant also did a limited edition of The Wind Through the Keyhole that included illustrations by Jae Lee which were not in the Scribner edition.

The Gunslinger in this set is a third printing, the Drawing of the Three is a second printing and the Waste Lands is a first printing. The set originally sold for $110.

Dio- the artwork is totally new in this edition of TDOTT. Phil Hale re-did all of his major art in this edition and it looks fantastic! Nothing wrong with the original artwork, which is also in the Signet trade paperback version, but Phil had grown as an artist since the original one was published and it shows.
