Ahhh, my former home state. Hey, the OU (my alma mater, well one of them anyway) football team has been pretty awesome over the years!

I always hear the word justice bandied about with this topic. If that's what people want, they live on the wrong planet. Is this a deterrent or just a show of force to assuage fears and satiate the victims? I don't know. I do know that murder and rape haven't stopped much, so not sure it's been effective. But as far as justice, unless it was the victim's family that got to kill the guy, not much justice in it really.

Why don't we buy an island and send all of them there instead. Have a Lord of the Flies showdown. Those that win, we send in to kill terrorists.

I like your idea, in theory, but then I think, "Nah. We'd just have The Rock, and no one needs a Nic Cage infestation." ;)

Scott, do the really nasty types eat with the general population or do they get their food at their cells?

Because if it's the latter, I'm thinking they can be told, "We'll invite the victim's family to help with your food prep now and then. We're not going to tell you which days, though."

Every now and then, say, "Oh, the victim's family stopped in three or four days ago to help with the food. How'd it taste?"

...Capital punishment doesn't work as a deterrent because it takes so freakin' long to deliver the "death blow"...for god's sake, there are people on Death Row that will die natural deaths before they're executed because of our screwed up judicial system...I may well horrify some-but I wish the guy had suffered longer, considering his crime-he died easy...and how in the hell we ever got into this drug induced death business is beyond me...rope and bullets worked for years, are a hell of a lot cheaper and pretty damn reliable...and AG?..I don't know where you're getting your supposition that it costs more to execute than house a condemned inmate....and I agree, it won't bring the victim(s)back, but the killer(s) don't deserve to live off the taxpayer while the families are bereft of their loved ones...work around this population and you'll see what I mean...it's easy to say "Oh the poor man" until God forbid-someone is brutally attacked or murdered...then the tune in the dance hall changes quick...I don't mean to offend anyone, but as far as I'm concerned...kill em all and let the devil have a party...
I owe you another beer someday sir...very well said. I keep hearing about "moral" plane? Where were the person's morals that killed a kid, or raped then strangled a woman like the guy who was just put to death in Oklahoma? Morality would have been putting a bullet in his head and saving everyone some money and would have also been a helluva lot more merciful than anything he showed his victim.

...and again that goes right back to my whole point of it takes too long to carry out the sentence...and DNA?, I agree it's horrible when mistakes are made, but technology is much improved...these older cases are before such technology or in it's infancy...
The thing about the DNA being used to exonerate people is also a problem as there are likely some errors made in the collection back in the seventies, eighties, etc, and and the value of these are questionable..while I do approve of people who are demonstrably innocent, beyond a doubt, being released,I would bet my hi hat that there are also some guilty folks that have been released simply on the lack or presence of questionable DNA.DNA is trumpeted as this great crime solver but steps have to be taken to insure it is collected correctly, without cross contamination, and a clear concise chain of custody of the evidence through collection,to storage,to introduction at trial..am betting there were lots of errors back in the day..wanted to thank all for responding,as this is a tough issue and no easy answers are readily available..

Gotta say first that I'm against the death penalty. Too much room for error that an innocent person is killed by mistake. Also that murder is murder, no matter who does it.
But. If someone MUST die, here are my two points of view:
1) If they can put a dog or cat down with one shot that works instantly, costs thirty bucks and doesn't seem to cause them any pain, why can't they do it for people?
2) Instead of using cute and fully innocent animals for drug or cosmetics testing, use these animals instead.

Because we have to have the big show. Instead of just putting them under and doing it, we have to have all of this ceremony with spectators that goes with it. I think the fact that they have to be awake when we do it is what is causing the problem.
