I am puzzled by you folks who don't fall right into Joyland - it was a bit different but I loved it right at the first sentence. I am a slow reader, but I read that one in just a day or two because I didn't want to put it down. I can see where it's a bit slow moving, and if you prefer more action, you don't get a lot of that until the last few chapters. What's your favorite then?

hG - its not that i dont like slow stories- i just didnt like the narration ending each hopeful crest with - 'and thats how it was' Passover.

*******spoiler********
The who dunnit wasnt for me , nor was the character changeover from the joyland trio, to the beach family. As for action at the end - hardly an edge of the seat climax. Reminded me of sideshow bob kidnapping bart and lisa
****spoiler******
Cant work out how to caption flake!

And i like slow build up stories- the long walk being my favourite.
I even liked blaze
Talisman - 3/4 way through and gave up at the machine guns and the train ride.
Wind and willows - dropped within 50pages (twttk) really disappointed.
Desperation- could not put down- then picked up redemption - loved them
Duma key - loved/hated/loved/hated-
Christine- thumbs up
Rage - brilliant

So its a bit of a hit and miss with me, some work, some dont- but DT ...audio never fails to inspire HG-
:)

I hear ya, friend! I haven't read The Long Walk. Might need to put that on my list then. I've got Desperation coming soon! I don't do much listening to books. I get lost and distracted, but it's only quiet around here while the monkeys sleep. And by the sound of creaking floorboards over my head right now, I need to go get the breakfast started. My hour of peace and quiet goes by much too quickly, darn it!

'Pause' pulls over, and parks up...

Can I just say that Will Patton has me hooked already. It's this kind of nArration that makes Stephen kings work come to life.

I drive thousands of kms a year and listen to various audios- frank muller being the top dog ( sadly missed)
The dark tower audio journey blows me away every time I begin my annual pilgrimage.

However, I have to say that I gave up on the wind through the keyhole for one reason- and one reason only--- sTEpHEn King !

He is a wonderful writer , and I have visited countless scenarios with the stroke of his pen, feeling both pissed at his characters and pity...

...but, I just cannot listen to him narrate, because he is not able to.

Leave it to the guys who don't write for a living - but can narrate.

I know it's his baby and he knows what each of the katet is thinking- doesn't mean he can get that interpretation across to his constant listeners - like Frank or George or Will can-and usually do with such amazing results.

So what I am saying is Will Patton needs to be called up and sat in the studio to record TWTTK .. NOW!!

Sigh...

Dude! :wha:;) Who knows how to read the work better than the author? He puts emphasis in the right places. His voice rises and falls with the words. My very favorite audios are Stephen reading.

Well, lets agree to differ dana, just because he knows his characters- dont mean he can potray it in audio. I find his drawl a tad monatone for stories - leave it to the experts i say. I know a few others that were disappointed with his version of TWTTK .

But heck, he sure can write masterpieces.

What other works has he done that you enjoy?

I have only heard Stephen King in interviews and his voice is not exactly what I would call an "announcer's voice" or a professional sounding voice.

When it comes to voices, some voices just drive me up the wall. Certain women on TV - I have to turn the sound off as they sound whiny, nasally or just downright grating on my nerves. So maybe that is what you are talking about Stanley (or is it Sheemus?)

By the way, I do love a Scottish accent on the right person. I mean Billy Connelly has a good one but not exactly dulcet tones, if you know what I mean? =D

I'd like to hear Eddie Vedder narrate - his voice is haunting and soothing to me. And if I could pick a career, I think it would be reading books on audio for a living. Wouldn't that be a super cool job for book lovers? I don't have a good singing voice but I do like to read out loud.

I tried to read out a story i had written - have you tried recording yourself read  I could last 1 minute- 1:30 at best before i stumbled or stuttered. And trying to remember voices :reading: - forget it . All my characters sounded like bob hoskins doing his cockney geezer routine.

Never thought of that....good call. Vedder would be a good choice for an audiobook..awesome voice.
