Doesn't really affect my opinion on this either way, as I don't even see a point in watching something that was already done beautifully with traditional animation 26 years ago- I actively cringe every time I hear some of the line readings in the live action trailers compared to the original ones of the 1991 animated film. I'm assuming that like so many other live action rehashes this isn't really meant for me, anyway; I actively grew up with the original, and that will always be Beauty and the Beast for me. This feels aimed more at younger people who may have seen the original film at some point but don't have much nostalgia attached to it (and who actually know who Emma Watson is, I guess.)
As for the issue at hand, it's not the first time an older character with no previously specified preference has been "re-imagined" as gay because he was originally effeminate or otherwise stereotypical- I feel this issue could be avoided if people would actually MAKE NEW STUFF with interesting, fully realized characters who might also happen to be gay. But that's just me, I guess.
Hi Shoesalesman - nice to see you pop in and post!I agree with pretty well everything here. Well said.

...aw geez, now he'll get a swelled head and stuff......Why thank you!
It's a remake, so the makers that be, needed a new hook so people would come to see a remake!!! It always comes down to the money....I just wish the media would stop making such a whoopy-ti-ding big deal about whether a character is gay or not.....who gives a damn really?....I know there are thousands of folks who still believe this is some kind of moral aberration and they are entitled to their idiocy, but dammit!......lets just enjoy folks for who they ARE...and not judge because they have a label slapped on them.....gawd amighty!......this just ticks me the hell off......
Cheers, man....aw geez, now he'll get a swelled head and stuff......
I agree, I thought at first that this would be a darker take on it where we would find out more background about the characters, especially the Prince/Beast. Now I'm hearing reviews that it is a total copy of the original. I'm sure I'll still think it's great, but man, that was a missed opportunity.
Why, oh WHY would they feel the need to redo Ducktales?!?
I know they are always being criticized for something. They got a lot of flack for not having diversity in their princess lineup, so they added Tiana (black) and Elena (latina). And more recently, there has been a big push by some communities to make Elsa gay in the upcoming Frozen sequel. So I guess it's a tough situation they're in, but yes, to the innocent bystander, the Le Fou thing definitely looks like tokenism.
Did anyone else see it yet? Saw it last night, and I was absolutely blown away! There is so much I could go on and on about, but I'll try to keep it to the thread topic. Josh Gad played Monsieur LeFou, and he was gay. Big whoop. It's so funny, because he just "was" gay throughout the whole movie, not in an overacted flamboyant way, but just normal. So in that aspect, there were quite a few Gay Moments (lol), if you were really looking for them. I kept asking myself, was that the "moment?" Wait, was that it? The one that I think all the hullabaloo was about was at the very end, and my goodness, it was so tame that you could easily miss it.
I actually think that the live action LeFou was a big improvement over the animated one, because he had much more to him than just being an idiot. He had a conscience, for one, and didn't really like going along with Gaston's plots in spite of his feelings for him.
To all those members here who feel the same way as I did about this remake; give it a chance and you might be surprised. I was happy to see that it was not, in fact, a direct word-for-word copy of the original. It can definitely stand on its own.
For all the bluster and controversy, it certainly was a success at the box office according to reports.
Pssst! It was the Gay Mafia! For all the bluster and controversy, it certainly was a success at the box office according to reports.
There's a mafia? Well, I'll be damned! I learn something every day.Pssst! It was the Gay Mafia!

At the risk of pointing out the obvious.....
Some people are upset about two guys kissing. But they seem OK that Belle falls in love with and kisses a bull.
