I should have asked you this ages ago - do you have a place you recommend to get a certificate of authenticity?

I should always just automatically defer to your knowledge.
Ohhh, the horror! The HORROR! You put me up on a pedestal and I am going to disappoint you immensely because I cannot recommend any place or person for you. I am so sorry, Shasta. I have never had to use this type of service before. Perhaps jchanic might be able to help? jchanic

I will never forgive you.

Oh wait, I totally just did. ;)

Not a problem. You're still the best.

Hello, I hope someone can help me here so that I can stop beating my head off the bookcase, lol. I have books that have a number line but looking through the Edition list on the site is not helping me. For example I know Firestarter and The Dead Zone state First Edition on the bottom of the page for true 1st/1st. The following I have, and this is what they state on the CP page ( unfortunately they do not have covers)
The Dead Zone first published in 1979 #series 10 9 8 7 6 5
Firestarter " " 1980 A 1st ed of this book has been pub. by Phantasia Press # line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2

Would this info mean they are a later reprint? I do not know if I should keep them in my collection,Thanks for the help :)

My understanding is that if it is missing the 1 in the number line then it is not a first edition, first printing but I'm not a collector so could be mistaken.

In almost all cases, that's true. Random House seems to be the exception: their number lines start with "2" (e.g. Black House). For all other publishers that I'm aware of, the lowest digit represents the printing.

I might have to change my previous statement. My three latest purchases, Revival, Mr. Mercedes and Dr. Sleep appear to be first editions if i understand correctly. They are from Shribner and say 1 3 5 7 9 !0 8 6 4 2 as the magic number. If i understood correctly what was being said here earlier they should then be firsts, correct?

Don’t really care about 1st editions, but when one comes around in good condition I'll usually swap out one of the book club ones. I did just picked up a 1st edition of Needful Things, no jacket, in less than great condition. Doesn’t matter much to me as I just like putting them on the credenza next to me just in order to savor the smell those old books emanate. There really is no smell quite like the smell of an old hardcover book. Renuzit really should come out with that scent.

I used to work in a book shop for many years so got a lot of first editions. I even got some books that had errors, for example I have a paperback copy of The Drawing of the Three, printed upside down in its cover. I also have a hardback copy of the Dark Half, the writing on the dust jacket was meant to be silver and embossed...mine is embossed but the silver isn't there...both were free cause no one wanted them YAY me :)
