I use my smartphone almost all the time. Of course you should be able to follow a conversation.
Texting is the only way to communicate with a good friend who is doing an internship on Grand Canary. Except Skype but you have to plan that in advance. And it keeps some other of my friendships intact. Another friend of mine does oscilate between her hometown and her center of living here. You can't reach a lot of people nowadays at home for a proper telephone call. Other doesn't like talking on a phone. Texting is good for making arrangements.
I text with my brother at least every sunday and we have a pretty good brother sister relationship.

Back to the news article. There are two people in a relative small place who doesn't have a topic to talk about texting is in no way an excuse for pointing with a rifle at someone.

Research to Internet communication has shown that writing skills are even better when texting and chatting. Abbrevations have a long tradition in the English language (see David Crystal) for more insights in the topic.

I absolutely hate to be with someone and they start texting. Now, I will say, if someone forewarns me that they are expecting an important phone call or text, than I am totally cool.

If I am with someone, my focus is on them. If I hear a ding on my phone, I may glance at it to make sure it is not one of my kids and an emergency -- but if it isn't, then that person can wait. The person I am with is what is important to me at that moment.
I totally agree...went to breakfast with friends and they all got out their phones, I made them put them face down on the table...first to pick up their phone paid the bill...we had a great chat!
