A documentary on the origins of Irish surfing. When I think of surfing, I tend to think of the tropical places, not Ireland. The documentary starts off telling about George Freeth, a man of Irish decent (living in Hawaii) who was instrumental in popularizing surfing in the early 1900s. He was also instrumental in creating the job of lifeguard. Once the history lesson is over, the documentary gets back to Ireland and has lots of magnificent surfing footage. It looks really cold though. ;-D Cillian Murphy narrates.

I watched one today on bill watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes. Very interesting stance on his work, not allowing any kind of merchandising whatsoever. Anything Calvin and Hobbes you see is not legit. It is stolen images.

For instance, how many of you have seen those Calvin stickers in car windows peeing on something? Stolen image not okay'd by watterson.

Just started watching it-who knew Seth Green was so deep?!?! ;;D
A really super interesting documentary to watch is one called Of Dolls and Murder, narrated by John Waters. It's about the nutshell studies (miniatures that are made to resemble crime scenes, murders, that have been used to train the police.). One of my favorites just for it's odd macabre nature.

And it's on netflix!

I'll have to check on that. Canadian and American Netflix content is different. I hope it's on here because that sounds fascinating!

My son was introduced to Michael Moore at school. Not literally. I mean they are watching one of his documentaries. (If you prefer I won't argue the term mocumentary. :) ). Anyway, he is really into it, so I 'be reserved a few others at the library.

I saw this a couple months ago-very disturbing.
Totally! The only thing I can think is,
even though he blinded her, he had money, he was obsessed with her and she knew that she couldn't go through life alone. Or felt that way. He would take care of her financially where she wouldn't have to worry about that. And although we know throwing acid on someone is not Love, I guess she talked herself into thinking it was. It was sad. I looked it up afterwards and I guess she has since passed away.

I agree. Their relationship was so bizarre and I remember feeling she was confusing jealousy with love and retribution for security. Almost as if she talked herself into believing it was her only option and had to call it "love" to justify it. It was a fascinating story, but IMHO it could have been done much better.

He was a totally stalking crazy bastid. Creeped me the f out. I think she needed someone to take care of her and she didn't want to be alone, so yep, talked herself into it like you said.

What would you have liked to have seen done to it to make it better?

It's been awhile, but I remember feeling the story was kind of choppy and jerked around in places instead of flowing chronologically. I'm not an expert, by any means! This sort of thing bugs me in many documentaries and movies, though. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it because of a short attention span. In these circumstances, it feels as if the writer forgets something or has an afterthought and inserts it at the current time instead of going back to where it fits. I wish I could remember specifics. The things I see as disconnects are probably what the creators define as creative expression!

I understand. And we are all experts in what works for us or doesn't! ;-D
