Rich Hill (2014)

This documentary follows 4 boys approximately 15 years old that are from different families in a depressed area of Missouri. It's hard to watch because it's basically a story of kids living in poverty. All four boys come from poor families where the parents are not working for different reasons. One of the boys is a good kid and you really feel bad for him. The other 3 boys have behavior issues and are a lot of trouble. It's interesting but depressing as hell as you know there is no good outcome for these kids.

I give it a 2/5

Hotline

'Hotline' is a feature length documentary about the intense connections made between strangers over the telephone, and explores these anonymous conversations people are often too hesitant ...

3/5

I'm watching a documentary on Netflix, TWA Flight 800. This is the airplane that went down in NY on its takeoff for France. This is just crazy. So much cover up! Liars, black hearts.

I'm not finished yet, but I can't remember if they tell the truth in the end or say it was a malfunction. Just lies! This plane was shot down by a missile. Too many witnesses describing the same events.

Cryin? Tell ya, I watched a doc about Anne Frank this weekend, Beyond the Diary I think it was called, and I'll admit, I choked up a bit at the end, but then I sorta puffed up with rage at the inherent evil of humanity.

THEN...I watched Peal Jam Twenty for about the sixth time, VH1 plays it often. Always loved Pearl Jam, but what gets me most about the documentary is all that footage from the early nineties, which fills me with an almost tear-jerking sense of nostalgia for my own lost youth...ugh, did all that happen so long ago?

Yeesh, I'm getting maudlin in my old age.

I watched Hotline and Into the Abyss on Netflix.

Hotline was about all sorts of hotlines, suicide, sex, homework, psychic -- interesting enough.

Into the Abyss was about two teens who killed 3 people for a joyride in a stolen car and truck they had for 72 hours before they were caught. The documentary style was a little disjointed and slow, but the story was interesting.

I recently watched West of Memphis - good Lord. The story of those 3 little boys was horrific and equally horrifying was watching 3 innocent teens go to prison for it. That crime made me so afraid of ever letting my children out of my sight, much less take off on their bikes alone - because most people KNEW whoever killed those boys was NOT in prison, but still walking the earth- West Memphis is just across the bridge. Echols gave a shout out to Sai King in the movie - in a conversation he had with his wife - it was from one of King's Constant Reader letters. I am not sure which one - I want to say Full Dark, No Stars. The one where SK says he knows he's ok, it everyone else he's worried about. Anyone know which one I'm talking about? Anyhow, the movie wasn't the greatest, but the answers were gratifying.

Started watching a six part docu series on Netflix last night when I couldn't sleep. It's called Chef's Table - about international chefs and how they started out. Finished the first episode about Massimo Bottura (I'd never heard of him before :a11: ) and thought it was interesting. Talented chefs are incredible artists - more than I ever realized before.

Yes, I've watched these documentaries since the first one. And at first, I thought they did do it. But by this last one, I really think it was one of the kid's stepdads. I wish they could nail him.

Watched Love Me (2014) on Netflix last night. Docu about men going to the Ukraine for "mail-order-brides." Only two of all the men interviewed actually brought women back to the U.S. and married them (will it last?). The rest of these guys paid thousands and thousands of dollars for the trip abroad and to correspond with some of the women. They are charged for the emails and also for the messages to be interpreted. The two women who came to the U.S. and got married, barely spoke a word of English initially, and the men they married sure didn't speak their language. Goes to show how insignificant verbal communication is to some people. It made me very sad for some reason.

That is sad - I hope they can find some club or something with people in it who speak their language - it would be lonely for them and imagine how homesick they would become.

I watched the Killer Legends one last night. It was OK. Don't know why they insisted on tromping around their locations in the dark.

Just watched No No: A Dockumentary.

It's about Dock Ellis, a pitcher who threw a no hitter in 1970 while tripping his socks off on LSD. Later in the same season he threw at the first four guys he faced in a game against the Cincinnati Reds. Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol ruined his career in the end. However, he was able to get clean and was became a substance abuse counselor. Liver damage from his excessive drinking caught up with him and he died in 2008. Pretty interesting guy and excellent film.

I saw this too. I remember Dock Ellis when I was a kid. That Pirate team was an entertaining team to watch. When people think that today's players have more substance abuse issues than the old-timers, they are very wrong. Heavy drinking and amphetamines were the substances of choice then.
