I am watching Art of Conflict about the murals of Ireland and the story behind the unrest in the region. I had a friend who was a member of this board and born and raised in Ireland who was so kind in answering my questions and explaining her country and this conflict. I miss her.

Just watched Tales From the Organ Trade -- wow wow wow. The black market for illegal organs is a nasty dirty business praying on uneducated, poor, desperate people. But before you judge, watch this documentary. It focuses on the buying and selling of kidneys. I see everyone's point of view on this.

This is a comment by a guy who was filming messages for youtube about the issue of buying and selling kidneys:

"There was a guy in Brooklyn here who got caught 6 months ago being a broker buying ...he became wealthy. But he broke the law and he saved hundreds of lives. I follow the law, I observe the law, and I've let hundreds of people die. Who's moral and who's immoral? I think I'm immoral and that guy who broke the law is more moral, he saved hundreds of lives. So yeah, I'm working within the system but I'm getting sick of the system."

For that comment to resonant, you have to watch the whole documentary. People are allowed to donate kidneys altruistically but not for money. When money comes into play, that's when things get muddy and dangerous. For the donor, for the recipient. Desperate people on both sides of that kidney.

This also reminds me of a Stephen Spielberg Night Gallery where a rich, blind Joan Crawford buys a deadbeat gambler's eyes (Tom Bosley).

If anyone watches this, let me know what you think.

American Movie is my favorite documentary. It covers a guy from Wisconsin named Mark Bochardht trying to make an independent horror film. It's hilarious, touching and sad. Lol, I'm not going to try to review it, but I suggest ordering it from Netflix.
Is it streaming or on a disc?

I miss her, too. Was sad to see that she was no longer here when I came back--kind, funny, interesting lady.

DJ, have you looked at any of the shorter documentaries that have showed up on Netflix? I believe most are from Sundance channel and are an hour or less. We've watched a lot of them lately, & they're interesting!

We've watched the ones about Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, Hitler's last days, the real story of the Amityville horror house, the Titanic... I'm sure there were more than those that I'm forgetting. Most of them are quite a bit better than History channel docs (IMHO)--less sensationalistic.

Okay, yes, I have seen those. The Joan of Arc is the one that really calls to me. I've seen the Amityville and Titanic ones. Great docs.

Last night I watched Reel Injun about Hollywood's portrayal of Human Beings in their movies. (Indians) Which apparently the word Indian was not in existence until it was given to them, up till that time, they just called themselves Human Beings.

Very good documentary. I recommend it.

I watched a doc on Pope Joan last night. I've read Donna Woolfolk Cross' novelization, so it sounded like it might be an interesting doc. Eh. It's a good story, but there's not much back up. Not saying it wasn't possible, but it would be damned difficult, given the living conditions and the politics at the time (both things weren't even addressed in the doc). It was entertaining, anyway, even if it wasn't convincing :)

I love my docos (much to a great numbers of my friends amusement) and cant go past David Attenborough. I have every doco he has made and think that the Planet Earth series has to be up there as one of the very best!
It was Sigourney Weaver who narrated it over here. And yes, one of the very best. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, that series was the best. Staggering, informative, beautifully filmed, painstakingly made, and wonderful.

If no one mentioned the original Cosmos, I'd include that. We started watching the reboot last night with Neil Degrasse Tyson.

If no one mentioned Woodstock, man, that one is a favored one from my youth.

That one on Woodstock is a great documentary and I have the new Cosmos recorded to watch.

Oh no! Not Mr Weaver! I am definitely not a fan! Have you seen 'Into the Universe' with Steven Hawking?

Watched a fascinating doc on BBC4 last night entitled "Bombay Railway". I think it was on last week too, but didn't catch it. I really hope it's going to be on every week, it was brilliant. The pride they have in their railway, and the work they do, was uplifting. The Brits "gave them" the railway, and they run it with more aplomb, with more gratitude, for so many more people, than we could ever hope over here. Not had a strike since 1972. I hope it's on every week.

Yes -- that was a very good show (I liked the part about the sound the arrows made and how therapeutic it was!)

Pope Joan? Could this be a Freudian slip @skimom2?
