You know, I really didn't feel anything for this character. I was not emotionally involved. There wasn't a hook for me. Yeah the guys wife dies and? Towards the end, I got a little more sucked in. I think he was justified.
I was emotionally involved because I've lost enough people to understand wanting someone to pay-retribution (obviously not the same scenario). But I did get lost and wasn't very interested in all the details of the plan.

This story encouraged me to 'stagger on' even when work sucks and times are difficult. It's another reason I read him often. Not only does he unknowingly encourage me, but I learn about depths of emotion. In this case, love, so strong that someone would kill for it: and revenge, cold, calculating, and heartless, yet justified, and da@n satisfying.

I forgot Hatred; complete, seething, blinding, hatred.

I've always thought the plan was a little TOO detailed.

I can't help but feel if this story had been written earlier in King's career, it would have been less plan, more action.

That's not to say it isn't a great story -- it is. I'm just saying it sags a little.

So, do you think the quote "Revenge is a dish best eaten cold" relates to not acting in the heat of the moment and biding your time, like Robinson did?

Yes, I think it is a fair statement. When people act in the 'heat of the moment' they make mistakes, get caught, or don't exact a calculated punishment.
Exactly-but I think in the end Robinson was past the point of caring if he was caught, don't you? He'd waited that long and planned the best he could and if it all turned on him, then at least he tried to get justice for his beloved!

I didn't reread Dolan's Cadillac although I have read the story multiple times. Curious, the use of color in this story...as those same colors relate to other stories from King...Duma Key...Deadzone...the obligatory spoiler:
In Duma Key, Wireman's beach buggy...golf cart?...had blue and yellow stripes. In Dolan's Cadillac, there is that business with the blue and yellow wires making the backhoe go. In Deadzone, the young child's snowsuit is blue and yellow...the young child held up as a shield....and who has proudly used young children as a shield and who has proudly defended their actions? What's it all about? A fascination with blue and yellow? The colors of the Swedish flag? Blue and yellow make green...or...I think my Crayolas did that...but memory being what it is...maybe all that is is poetic license unwarranted. I believe there are/could be other uses of the blue-yellow combination in other stories. Or are they bools...to borrow from another King story...too, there is definitely the use of a single color...blue.

Maybe the material in the spoiler relates to Robinson, his actions, his reason for living, revenge. The colors make green. Is that color symbolic in the SK universe? Simply details? Nothing more? Is Robinson heroic, in the literary sense? In the sense that most of the Big Talking Heads have defined the hero in literature? What would Homer do? Not Simpson. Is Dolan an Odysseus and Dolan's Cadillac nothing more than a Trojan Horse?

Hi. Really enjoyed this thread and reading with you. There are notes on each story at the end of both the hardcover and paperback. They answer a few questions and are a fun interesting read.
Will try to join discussions when possible.
We've both read the story and bought the DVD but the part that sticks with both of us is the video in the notes.

I feel so stupid! Did not realize notes were in the back of the book as I haven't read the last story yet. We'll have to make sure everyone knows to check that section as well. Extra sugar, just what the hyped up kid needs 8). Seriously, thanks and feel free to join in the story conversation next week (End of the Whole Mess, SKMB, Reading and Discussion Group, 8.16.14). goofy horse pic.jpeg

OOps..that should be Friday 8.15.14 @9:30EST, 8:30 Central.

Hi there!
I could not join in last night, but I will read "The End of the Whole Mess" for next Friday.

I read all the comments here just now, but I only "liked" Walters. (I liked almost all of them, but too lazy to 'click' like over and over). (Well, I liked some of your comments, too VultureLvr45)

If I may make a comment on Dolan's Cadillac - I would recommend this story to friends. I would also recommend they watch the movie! (I recorded it and it is in my DVR or PVR on my TV).

Having never read "End of the Whole Mess" I look forward to reading it this week. I hope it is as good as "Dolan's Cadillac" was!
