I would also like a male.

Here's what gets me.

Many people I know who are fans of the show hated Capaldi from before even seeing his first show. They want someone sexy...and nobody will ever match Tennant (in their mind) in sexiness. But they were accepting of Smith...he was sexy enough. These are people my age. Smith is closer to my son's age. Thinking "sex" and Smith's doctor seems...illegal.

So, these people who oppose Capaldi because he is "to old to be sexy" want a female doctor. If these women were bisexual that would make sense. But they are not. So...why is female OK if you want a doctor you can fantasize about?

None of that matters to me at all. My first doctor was Eccleston. My favorite has been Tennant. But, I loved the childlike quality of Smith, I wanted him to be okay like he was my kid.

Capaldi grew on me, but I wasn't attached to him because I missed his first 2 seasons.

I'm not thinking sexy at all. To me, the doctor is just a guy. I just don't see the character as female. Not that a female isn't capable to play the part, but for some reason, it just seems like a male role that shouldn't be messed with just to satisfy a chant for gender equality. Just like people don't see a black man as Roland, I don't see the doctor as female.

But, if they bring a female on board, I'll embrace it and take the creative journey with the series.

Peter Capaldi started off great but he was ultimately wasted. It's like the writers never could get a handle on what this iteration of the Doctor was supposed to be. I liked that he started off a bit grim and sardonic, but then he ends wearing 3D glasses and playing guitar. It became stupid. I haven't started the recent series as yet, as I usually catch up just before the Christmas special.

As for the new Doctor, last I heard the odds were in favour of Luke Treadaway, who is the twin brother of Harry. I smiled when I read that, because when I first saw Harry Treadaway in Penny Dreadful, I though he would make for a great Doctor should they ever go back to casting younger. (in case you already didn't know, HT is playing Brady Hartsfield in the Mr Mercedes TV series). That said, British bookies are historically way off-the-mark when it comes to predicting successive actors for this role, so I'm sure it will come as a complete surprise to the fans. Tennant and Smith were lightning-in-a-bottle casting, especially as they appeared back-to-back. It'll be difficult to replace that, and I hope they don't try. Just get a grip on the character, and remember why the fans love him: he's an alien outsider with a fondness for Earth, a scientist, an explorer, a being who controls time and is totally unpredictable.

The one thing I want to see more of is other rooms inside the Tardis. I really liked the 8th Doctor's (McGann) adventure for this. And no, I don't think the Doctor should be female.

I agree with most of what you posted. But I loved Capaldi from the instant he started.

I think when they decided it was his last year, and Bill was a one-year companion, and the writer (it is the writer?) were all leaving the end of this year, they just threw in the towel.

As for a female lead...well, look what happened when The Master was cast as a female. I know, a lot of people liked Missy. But, I mean, in the end....tears and emotions took control.

She was very good in Broadchurch. I'll watch.

I'll at least start the season.

I think a woman can be the doctor. But I have no faith in the writers.

I don't think they did well with a female Master, and I don't hold much hope for this. If it becomes all about feminism I'll throw in the towel early. It's not what I want from Dr. Who.

This is the first time I have been really disappointed in a change of doctor. I am really sorry to see Capaldi leave.

I am glad it isn't Tilda Swinton, who was rumoured a while ago. I cannot ever imagine her as the doctor.
