Yes, the daytime parades in the suburbs are more of a family atmosphere. I grew up in the suburbs of New Orleans, and some of my favorite childhood memories are of those parades. On Mardi Gras day, we'd wake up before dawn, put on our costumes, and head to the city. My dad would pack the Beetle with donuts and ice chests, and we'd be so excited to get downtown and wait for the parades. Because the Tuesday parades were in the city, the buildings blocked out the sun and made it very cold and windy. If Mardi Gras had a scent, it would be the mixture of diesel, cold wind, city pavement, and American beer.
