Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you wanna to find out what's behind these cold eyes,
You'll just have to claw your way through this disguise

Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am

It don't matter to me
If you take up with someone who's better than me
'Cause your happiness is all I want for you to find.
Your peace, your peace of mind.

And I would give anything I own
I'd give up my life, my heart, my home
I would give everything I own,
Just to have you back again

I was digging up some oldies for Grandma 'n' me and ran into Bread's "Getting to Know," which I had fond memories of, so I played it, and oh my goodness was it a bubblegum-ish thing. Destroyed my memories. That's when I went to, "It Don't Matter to Me," which to my mind is about as loving as you can get - wishing the happiness for the other person and devoid of possessiveness.

[I think David Gates] was right. Selfless love is possible. I can say and mean I value your deepest happiness more than I value realizing my hopes and desires for this relationship. And I am strong enough to fight for the former, even if I am personally devastated by the outcome of the latter.

Selfless love is not only possible, but freeing. Makes you very "small" and very expansive at the same time. At once less important, but more powerful.

I've had to rely on selfless love (which is actually a redundancy since love "seeks not its own") a few times in order to save my sanity. And it most definitely is freeing; sometimes it's the only truly freeing thing.

"It Don't Matter to Me" will always be one of my favorite tunes. It was popular during a very heavy, difficult time in my history. The sound of it moves me very deeply. I can't listen to it sometimes, in fact.

I have the same type of reaction to Harry Chapin's "Taxi Driver" sometimes.

I've got something inside me
Not what my life's about
'Cause I've been lettin' my outside tide me
over till my time
runs out

It's tough sometimes.

Another one from that time which is hard for me to listen to is "Day After Day" by Badfinger. Funny how powerful music can be.

Really? is it just because or is do you have a more personal reason for the tears? And why aren't you at the party?
I think it's a combination of his sweet voice and personal stuff too. Also, when he sings in Lost Without Your Love, "...since you left I hardly make it through the day, my tears get in the way..." I cry. When Jackson Browne sings Here Come Those Tears Again...I cry. I've always been emotional about songs, especially those from my youth.
I'm comin to the party!

Oh good! There are only a couple of us.

I can get emotional, too. Zep's The Years Gone can get to me, it's just such a gorgeous, heartfelt, evocative piece of music.

Talk of poems and prayers and promises and things that we believe in
How sweet it is to love someone, how right it is to care
How long it's been since yesterday - what about tomorrow?
What about our dreams and all the memories we share

---------

To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean,
To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and the living,
In search of the answers of questions unknown

"Calypso," to which he gave his proceeds of the song.

I'm in a (John) Denver mood.

Great stuff, Grandpa. An Evening with John Denver will always be a favorite album (album?) of mine, and I thought post-amazing-John Denver-heyday I figured his best work was over, but then there was Calypso.

"Freebird"

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.

But if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change, oh, oh, oh, oh.
And this bird you can not change.
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows I can't change.

Bye, bye, baby, it's been a sweet love, yeah,
Though this feeling I can't change.
But please don't take it so badly,
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame.

But if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change, oh, oh, oh, oh.
And this bird you cannot change.
And this bird you cannot change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord, help me, I can't change.

Lord, I can't change.
