Maybe that expression is about when firefighters start a line of small fires to cause forest fires to burn out. The line of smaller fires burns up everything flammable. The forest fire has nowhere left to go.
I've heard about firebreaks, if that's what they call it. But the usual way to fight fire is not with fire. So if someone is going to make up saying about something it should be clearer. Like, fight wild fire with a small line of fire to clear the brush, and go on to say, fight a house fire with a water hose or baking soda. Doesn't have the same ring, but it's truer. :cower:

Well, people tried that, but other people began saying things more incredulous, tedious and boring than them so they stopped.

You know the expression, fight fire with fire.
The first time I heard that I thought the person who said it was saying it wrong because you fight fire with water or baking soda. Even though the person who said it, said it right, it still doesn't make sense to me.
Have you ever seen the fire department take a fire to a fire to put it out? What am I missing here?
Are they talking about gun fire? If they are they should say so and quit messing with my understanding of how things work. :umm:
I think it means to use against your enemy whatever methods they are using against you. For example, if someone is talking trash about you, talk trash about them. Use the same tactics against your opponent.

It still seems like an exercise in futility. I kinda get where they are coming from. I just think it's not really good advice. Maybe I just think too much. LOL

You're probably right in that it's not the best advice. I guess, at some point, if someone is treating you badly, and you've exhausted all the 'nice' ways to get it to stop, your only recourse may be to use the same methods they're using against you.
