As some of you probably know, and as most of you probably don't care, we're getting some new flooring and we're having a problem deciding between two options. Both are laminate with a wood grain look. The oak choice matches our kitchen cabinets and kitchen table perfectly while the other is a slight shade lighter. I love the match but I'm worried with the floor, cabinets, and table everything will kind of run together and you'll lose everything. The lighter shade is beautiful but is a touch lighter than all of the above, but matches our doors almost perfectly.
The kitchen is a wood and stone look, and the living room is under construction but will be pale yellow, white, with some reds and blacks thrown in.
WWYD? I'm running out of time. I'm pretty sure I'm an indecisive person, but I'm just not sure :p

They occasionally stick me into the flooring dept at my part-time job when someone calls off sick. I think they do this because I sound like I know what I’m talking about. :p Given that... You should have two dominant colors and one accent color in a kitchen. Usually the cabinets and countertops are the dominant colors, the wall color is muted, and the floor serves as the accent color that alternates both lighter and darker colors to complement the dominant colors. What I do when we're looking for a room change is take a picture of the room. Take pictures of the floor/carpet samples and then photoshop it into the room pic to see how they look together.

Thanks DiO :) I'm a horrible photoshopper though. I don't even know how to photoshop, actually.. :/

Our thought was if we went with the matching cabinet/table/floor, we could get area rugs. Our kitchen is huge, so this wouldn't be a problem. The walls are a mixture of grays, I really like the stone. The countertops are muted as a beige.

Carpets in kitchens are a nightmare, IMO. I had them once... never again. Only carpet in the kitchen is a mat in front of the sink and one leading out the sliding doors to one of the decks.

You can take pictures and upload them here. I can photoshop them together for you in a matter of minutes. :)

But in all honesty, it's best to go with your gut feeling. Don't overthink things.

Bump!!!

We've chosen the light shade and the floor will be installed around Labor Day. Now we must paint and we've decided to lighten up the very dark living room. We're toying with an off white shade and a light yellow/golden shade that's very pretty and inviting, warm but light (that sounded so stupid. Apologies but I've no other way to describe it.) We have a chair rail in the centre of the walls and are doing one color on the top and one on the bottom. Which do you think would look best; darker color (light yellow) at the bottom with lighter color (off white) on the top? Or lighter color (off white) at the bottom with darker (light yellow) on the top? (Edit: the ceiling is white with no crown moulding.) FWIW the living room furniture is black leather and there are lots of green plants (tomato plants FTW) and the rugs/décor has hints of a deep burgundy.
TIA :) I hate doing this crap but I'm always so pleased when it's finished!

Lighter top, darker bottom, and chair rail to complement the ceiling. Now you just have to figure out which of the 25+ shades of off-white paints and 50+ shades of yellow/golden to choose from. :p

I would do yellow on bottom. I think the off white will draw the eye up giving the room a larger more open appearance.

We recently had our living room/dining room carpet replaced with wood (not laminate). Acacia.

We've had this stuff for three or four months now and still are overjoyed every time we see it. It looks much better with our furniture in it.
