My son is eleven years old. He's very bright like his mom, but he's very pre-occupied constantly. He talks fast, he runs wherever he goes even if it's from the living room to his bedroom. The other day a simple phone call to him turned into a "Who's on first?" conversation. He rides the bus home so he's home for around an hour and a half before either of us arrive home from work. He has chores to do, get the laundry going, grab the mail, etc. to set the stage for this conversation.

I called his cell phone at about 4pm to check to see if a package I had ordered from Amazon.com had shown up.

Me: "Hey bud, how'd school go today?"

Daniel: "Good."(distracted tone of voice, can tell he's already working on his chores in order to get done faster so he can get to his laptop)

Me: "Did I get a package in the mail today?"

Daniel: "Yep."

Me: "Who's it from?"

Daniel: "Umm, I don't know I wasn't here when it was delivered, I got home around 3:30."

Me: "......No, I mean WHO is the package from?"

Daniel: "I really don't know dad, I didn't see it get dropped off, it was already on the porch when I got off the bus." (no
wiseguy tone of voice or anything, I can tell he's answering honestly....)

Me(laughing): "No, genius, I mean who SENT me the package?"

Daniel: "OH!!!, ok, hold on....(sounds of running, I'm assuming heading toward the bar in the kitchen where we usually put packages).....you still there dad?"

Me: "Yep, still here."

Daniel: "The package was sent by.......FedEx it says."

Me(just shaking my head at this point): "Ok bud, thanks, I appreciate it.

Daniel: "Can you pick me up something to eat on the way home? I forgot to eat my lunch today and I'm starving."

Me(starting to re-consider my decision to let him stay home by himself after school this year): "Did you forget your lunch?"

Daniel: "No, I took it to school with me, but I forgot to eat it."

For a kid that makes straight A's in school it amazes me sometimes how he's able to make it through the day..lol Everyday is an adventure with him.
He's just getting you warmed up for the teenage years.:D

Enjoy the simplicity of his life's adventures. Turn that conversation over in your mind and go forward to adventures in driving a car!

The little guy I watched told me the other day all I do is sit on the couch and watch TV.

This was AFTER I did 5 loads of their laundry. Made their bed, loaded the dishwasher. Changed a bazillion diapers, made bottles, fixed lunched and built a whole huge leg/octonaut city in the playroom.

That sucks, lol. What did you say to him?

Years ago a girlfriend and I visited a friend of hers who had kids, one of whom was a very precocious, friendly little girl of maybe five years old who seemed to like me. We were all sitting in the living room watching TV. I must've seemed nervous or tired because the little girl came over to me leaned in close and said, "Relax and join yourself."

LOL. I'm looking forward to trying to explain the standard transmission and how a clutch works, should be an interesting conversation in a few years.
I'll be doing this in a couple of years myself.
When my dad taught me, he would bring a Jack & Seven to drink. I learned lots of new curse words while that drink sloshed all over the car.

Yesterday, RJ was playing with one of hubby's old lunch boxes. He carried it around the living room, then he would turn around and wave, and say "Bye!! See ya!" Then, he set it down and opened it up, and he had put his blankie and his sippy cup inside. That is when I really had to laugh. Had his favorite things in there!

I've discovered that my son shares an unfortunate similarity to me; he likes banjos.

Hey, at least I've got someone to listen to Bluegrass with!
Nothing wrong with that. Sirius XM radio has a very good Bluegrass station. They play a good mix of I guess I'd call it "Mountain" Blue Grass, old school Blue Grass, with a smidge of gospel Blue Grass every now and then. I could listen to Chet Atkins play indefinitely and it would never get old.

I spoke with his home room teacher a few weeks ago during parent-teacher conferences. He had nothing but good things to say about Daniel. He complimented him on being very attentive and respectful in class, said he always pays attention and is one of those kids that the teacher enjoys seeing everyday. I asked him where he hid the clone of my son that he sends home everyday. I started telling him about his recent phase of absentmindedness. His teacher got a good laugh out of it and told me not to worry, that he'll come out of it around the age of 25.........not sure if he was kidding or not...lol. In spite of his forgetful nature nowadays, I think he's more interesting and a wonder to be around now more than ever. The wheels are turning so fast now in his head, it's like talking to a young man now instead of a kid. Pretty soon, I'm going to turn around and he'll be off to college, I just have a feeling I'll have to remind him to grab his backpack and car keys everyday....:)

I have a 26 year old and a 22 year old. I'm still waiting for the absentmindedness to go away.

My son has been making faces with me.
It started about a month ago, where he would look at me with his nose all scrunched up, his lips flared a little, and he'd breath in these short little bursts. He looks like he's mad as all get out, but I can't help laughing. I've started making the face whenever he does, and we'll go back and forth for a good five minutes. He's my little Drama King, but I love him.
