Confession: the further the show has gotten from the books, the less I've cared if I see it or not. I've not seen the last season at all, and never finished the 4th. The first 3 seasons did a good job of blending characters where they needed to, choosing important events, and bringing the story to life. They worked to keep the character development believable (and character is one of Martin's strongest suits, along with his crazy strong world building). I tolerated the wildly increased sexual content because: HBO. As the show progressed, though, I think the writers and show runners have gotten lazy about making a tight, believable narrative (you know what I mean--though the situations are fantastic, the way people behave should be believable) and focussed on stunt and GASP moments without the narrative to support them. Just my opinion, of course :)

Out of Order Where are you at now?

I'm back to not liking this book as much and think it's because I'm not as invested in the Greyjoy arc. There are some interesting characters but overall, just don't care enough about them to want to read more. Trying to be patient as I would guess it will all tie in eventually.

I was nervous about that too when I saw that the Iron Islands had their own map in the beginning of Book 4. I do like Damphair but I'd rather read about The Mother of Dragons....;;D

I'm up to
Jon telling Sam he must go to the Citadel to become The Wall's new Maester. At least we can see how that might tie in with that opening of the book with Pate and co. in OldTown.

It is nigh impossible to for any adaptation to be faithful, especially a continuing series of novels. It was intended as a trilogy originally and oddly enough the fourth volume was where my interest began to drift. I think there is a tipping point when a narrative can become too large.

To The Wall with you!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know...I found this past season as good as the first. Shocking, beautifully photographed, magnificent attention detail and lots of nudity. I mean plenty of action.......;)

428? Holy smokes! You're tearing through this one. Do you have number 5 already or do you have to get it still?

So, did you find out what happened to
Pate yet?
I have the 5th one waiting in the wings. Steve's agent for foreign rights is also George R.R. Martin's agent so he (the agent) sent me all 5 books. Score!

Not sure how much to say about
Pate
as I don't know how they handled that in the TV series. Sorry if this is a book spoiler for you.
I've read the part where he gives the key to the Alchemist and then later drops dead thinking of Rosey.

Pate hasn't been mentioned in the show as of yet so I'm not sure if he'll be in it or not at this point. I read the part with him in the beginning where he gives the key to the Alchemist and gets the money to bed his dear Rosey. I was thinking he was poisoned, but not sure if fatally so. I guess he hasn't shown up again up to where your are then? Do you think he was poisoned when he bit the gold coin Dragon to see if it was real?

I just assumed he was dead but that makes sense that it was the coin that poisoned him now that you mention it. That part was somewhat ambiguous and he hasn't been mentioned again (that I recall). I just remember thinking to myself, Don't do it, Pate!! That Alchemist is up to no good and Rosey isn't going to give you a second look anyway! I'm a little worried about what's going to happen to Sam and/or Aemon once they get to the Citadel because I think that key may play a part with them. I'm not that far ahead yet, though.

I think one of the reasons I'm going through it so fast is because I want to get back to "the good part" but I'm one of those who can't bring myself to skip over parts even when they're boring to me so it's a bit frustrating. I'll even go back to reread a passage if I inadvertently skipped over a few words. Now if only doing that improved my retention--have to admit I had to go back to look up who
Pate
was, but once I figured that out, I did remember the rest.
