I've really enjoyed it. Martin is an experienced writer, and it's just a joy to see a fully thought out and planned world. So many aren't more than sketches. Martin gives a sense of depth of field, if that makes sense. Be aware when you get to book 4 & 5: they're different. Book 4 is one set of characters and book 5 is another. The action takes place simultaneously until the end of book 5, when the two sets of characters come together in the story again. It was a difficult to get used to at first (and I've heard of plenty of people that drop the series at book 4), but it's ultimately very satisfying. I'm very much looking forward to book 6!

I picked up the boxed set on Amazon last month. I got them for $18, which I thought was a great price until I happened to see they were reduced to $13 a couple of days after I ordered them. Oh well.

I haven't started in on the series yet. Usually not my cup of tea, but the series is so highly regarded I'm excited to check it out.

I also recently purchased Martin's Fevre Dream as well. I had seen it recommended on here and it sounded very intriguing.

I really liked Fevre Dream. There was a time transition that was sort of clumsy, but it worked in the end. I wasn't at all fond of Tuf Voyaging (another stand-alone book), though. Couldn't even finish it.

Haven't read anything else by him but i have read the 5 books in ice and fire. Real good fantasy. It is thought out beforehand and has a depth that many lacks. Characters that are big and important sometimes does not make it. It is, dragons and all, a very real world.

I read the first four as they were published, not sure if I'd be willing to do it again once the series is finished, if it ever is.

Another two series I think on a par with Martin's are, the Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson and the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss.

I am about 1/3 of the way through the fifth book. Skimom is absolutely right - book 4 was a challenge at first, but I stuck with it. So far, book 5 is great. I've watched some of the HBO series on YouTube, but I prefer reading the books.
I liked the first three seasons, even with the diversions from the books, but I've struggled with the fourth season (still haven't finished that one) and don't know if I care if I see the fifth. Very much looking forward to the last books, though!
